Works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has said a RM55 million allocation will be used to improve the East-West Highway (JRTB) this year. Several key sections of the highway have been identified for upgrading works, including the site of the tragic accident that recently claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students.
Nanta noted in a recent Facebook post that since 2023, various initiatives have been undertaken to enhance the Gerik-Jeli route of the JRTB, particularly along the FT04 federal road. In June that year, an allocation of RM30 million was approved for the reconstruction of sections of the highway, with an additional RM30 million announced by prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim two months later to further upgrade the route.
This allocation was used for road resurfacing as well as the repair of facilities, bridges, street lights and traffic lights along both directions of the route. All upgrading works on FT04 were completed in phases between July and August 2023 at a total cost of RM55.73 million, based on road damage assessments conducted through the pavement condition assessment (PCA). Last year, RM7.2 million had been allocated for various repair works at several other sections of the route, Nanta added.
“As I have emphasised before, the ministry remains fully committed to ensuring that road infrastructure is safe and comfortable for all users. At the same time, I must stress that road safety is a shared responsibility, including that of road users themselves,” he wrote in his Facebook post.

55 million can’t do a jack. Not even enough to paint the road by gov standard.
Make sure jangan subcon->subcon->subcon->subcon->subcon-> jalan buat pakai teko air.
Semua subcon…only the main one profit big…take money no work done…subcon terakhir cut corner…the road tat bad meh…more like taking opportunity to award deals to kontraktor to get “work” done.
