PBEM all for driver database, speed limiters for buses

The Malaysia Express Bus Operators Association (PBEM) has expressed support for the transport ministry’s proposal to develop a driver database and mandate speed-limiting devices (SLD) for all heavy vehicles, including express and tour buses, Bernama reports.

“With this system, bus operators can reduce recruitment time and costs, monitor drivers more efficiently, and identify those needing further training. It will also enhance the company’s reputation by helping to prevent accidents caused by driver negligence,” PBEM chairman Mohamad Nazri Md Yusof said.

He added that the database would help operators recruit better-qualified drivers by screening applicants based on clean employment and traffic records, while avoiding those with poor discipline or frequent offences.

On SLDs, he acknowledged that speeding remains a major cause of fatal road accidents, and such devices serve as a critical safety measure.

“Installing SLDs in each bus’ electronic control unit (ECU), with specifications that prevent tampering or deactivation, would effectively stop drivers from exceeding speed limits,” he said, adding that PBEM strongly supports SLD mandation, which complements the existing GPS tracking systems.

The PBEM chairman urged members not to focus solely on profits, but to prioritise passenger and driver safety by strictly complying with all relevant laws, regulations and licensing conditions.

This kind of speed limiter will not work in Bolehland. Just like the taxi meter, no one will trust. Enforcement still the best way like in China and Singapore. Here giving discount to summon and 60 pending summons still can drive like his father road. How many lives do you think it need to sacrifice when the gomen know what they are doing?

  • Funny. When all the accidents happen, then only support. If no accidents, then you all against. I can assure you that they wouldn’t want this as this can affect their target as quite a lot of heavy vehicles rely on commission, not fixed wage. I believe with this kind of implementation, drivers who earn commission will surely demand a higher asking price to offset the time, which i believe this tycoon wouldn’t agree. Then what about heavy vehicles which are older? How are you going to implement a speed limit?

very simple question. as a passenger boarding a bus, how do we check if the driver is approved, and wont be endangering our lives? make this possible, so passengers can check/counter-check if the driver is approved, and if not, held the bus company responsible with fines.
