The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has thwarted an attempt to smuggle out 3,500 litres of subsidised diesel worth an estimated RM90,000, Bernama reports.
A Monday 8am operation at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex in collaboration with the road transport department (JPJ) led to the inspection of a suspicious-looking pole trailer lorry.
“A thorough inspection by officers on duty revealed an additional tank hidden underneath the lorry, filled with an estimated 3,500 litres of diesel. The modus operandi involved modifying a pole trailer lorry to evade detection by the authorities,” AKPS said in a statement. The case is being investigated under Section 6 and Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and the lorry has been impounded for further investigation.
Earlier this year, the domestic trade and cost of living ministry‘s (KPDN) Penang chapter raided a diesel smuggling syndicate’s illegal warehouse beside Sungai Perai in Sungai Lokan, seizing 27,000 litres of subsidised diesel expected to be sold in the local market.

Smuggling activities will decline significantly when the potential profit is substantially reduced, especially if the risk of getting caught or punished remains the same or increases. The most effective way to reduce smuggling profit is by removing subsidies that create price disparities.
The more you control higher the black market gets. Remove subsidies.
