Unexploded bomb found near PLUS Menora Tunnel caused 15 km jam – detonated, highway safe to use

Were you stuck in a terrible jam on the PLUS North South Highway near the Menora Tunnel yesterday? If you were wondering if there was any unusual reason for it, well, a bomb was found and they had to close all lanes to traffic.

The unexploded bomb, identified as an 81 mm mortar bomb from the Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) category, was discovered around 9.30 am yesterday near KM 265 during landscaping works. A supervisor then alerted highway patrol officers, and a police report was lodged at the Jelapang police station just past noon, according to the Malay Mail.

The Perak police bomb squad, assisted by its Ipoh district counterpart, carried out a high-order electrical detonation of the bomb. “The bomb was intact and safely destroyed without any loss of life or property,” said Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin, who confirmed that the route is now safe.

The discovery of the bomb and the subsequent effort to detonate it safely led to a temporary closure of both northbound and southbound lanes between Kuala Kangsar and Ipoh, causing a 15 km jam. PLUS reopened all lanes in both directions at 3.44 pm.
