Bonhams recently concluded its auction at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, which saw the sale of the well-known Mazda RX-7 VeilSide Fortune from the 2006 film The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
Driven by Han Lue who was portrayed by Sung Kang, the car was one of the most recognisable movie cars of the 2000s with its vibrant colour combination and widebody look. Prior to the auction, the RX-7 was estimated to sell for between 250,000 and 350,000 pounds (about RM1.4 million and RM2 million).
However, the final price was a lot higher when the gavel hit the auction block. According to the auction listing, the car sold for a cool 911,000 pounds (RM5.2 million), with Hagerty reporting it to be a record for RX-7s and Mazda road cars.
This car is understood two to be one of only two surviving cars used on set from nine reportedly built for the film. It was built by VeilSide after being commissioned by Universal Studios and comes with fitted with the former’s Fortune wide bodykit, 19-inch Andrew Premier Series Racing Evolution 5 wheels and Pirelli P Zero Nero tyres.
Finished in pearlescent orange with high-gloss black accents, the car retained the production markings done during filming and was overhauled after the cameras stop rolling. It got a new clutch, brakes, coil-over suspension and Blitz Nur-Spec exhaust system, while the twin-rotor turbocharged engine was rebuilt to near-stock specifications by legendary tuner RE-Amemiya.
To-date, the car has covered 107,480 km (66,785 miles) from new and its interior is equipped with VeilSide’s own racing bucket seats with composite shells, an Alpine sound system, a polished NOS bottle (currently not connected) as well as carbon fibre, aluminium, velour, vinyl and chrome trim. A vehicle tracker and custom-made stainless-steel prop for the rear hatch to showcase the sound system are also included.
New Era Imports, who had been involved on the film with VeilSide and Universal Studios, acquired the RX-7 after filming and remained its sole owned in the United Kingdom. Documentation to proof the car’s authenticity and screen use make it a collectible, a really expensive one as the auction result shows.
