Seat belt enforcement for school buses as well – JPJ

The wearing of seat belts in express and tour buses has been made mandatory since July 1, and the road transport department (JPJ) plans to expand this to buses owned by institutions of higher learning and fully residential schools as well, reports Bernama.

State-level technical and enforcement teams will be mobilised to collaborate with institutions in inspecting their buses beginning August, said JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli.

“Almost all higher education institutions and residential schools have their own buses… we want to ensure that these vehicles are properly maintained and comply with specifications, and that their drivers also adhere to road safety regulations,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Bus passengers are encouraged to file complaints (accompanied by photo or video evidence and details of the bus journey) to the department via the MyJPJ app or email if there’s something wrong with their seat belts, such as if they’re missing, broken or not working.

Wooo…this will wipe out A LOT of retirees who do freelance transport for fetching school kids. I know there are bad apples, but majority of these cater to young dual income parents. Yet another grey-area pressure to prospective parents.
