Chery’s Lepas sub-brand has made its first overseas debut at this year’s Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), just a few months after its official unveiling in April.
Three SUVs were presented at the event, with the first confirmed to go on sale in Indonesia being the L8, which is already being assembled in China. The D-segment SUV is said to be roughly the same size class as Chery Tiggo 8, measuring 4,688 mm long, 1,860 mm, 1,695 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, although further details aren’t available for now.
According to Indonesian media outlets, the L8 will be offered with a “super hybrid system,” which points towards Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) that includes conventional and plug-in hybrid systems.
Joining the L8 is the L6 that will compete in the C-segment market, while the L4 is targeting A0-segment buyers. Again, no official specifications are available for now as this looks to be a brand launch – the cars on display are left-hand drive examples.
If you’re curious, the brand name fuses the words ‘leap’ and ‘passion’, so it should be pronounced as ‘leap-pass’ and not ‘le-pas’. Lepas models are designed following the ‘Leopard Aesthetic’, with key cues being slim daytime running lights meant to evoke a leopard’s focused eyes.
Meanwhile, the sides feature three distinctive lines that refer to the muscles of the big cat’s front arms, hind legs and lower abdomen. The company also points out that the the smooth and simple surfacing are inspired by pottery.
As for the interior, all three SUVs have a simple dashboard design and a flowing centre console featuring a large, portrait-format touchscreen said to be reminiscent of a “waterfall following downwards.”
Indonesia is only the start for Lepas, as the brand has said it plans to rapidly advance its mission to become “the brand of choice for premium lifestyles” worldwide.
