Lepas Malaysia social media pages now live – Chery sub-brand to be launched soon with L8 as first model?

Lepas L8

It looks like Chery’s new Lepas sub-brand will be launching in Malaysia with the emergence of local social media pages on Facebook and Instagram.

Chery announced Lepas for global markets at this year’s Auto Shanghai in April, with Indonesia being country for the sub-brand’s first overseas debut at the recently concluded Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS).

While the Malaysian social media pages don’t offer much in the way of information, it is presumed that the L8 will the first model to be introduced, as is the case in Indonesia. In fact, the first shipment of L8s were shipped out of Wuhu Port to overseas markets on June 6.

The D-segment SUV is said to be roughly the same size class as Chery Tiggo 8, measuring 4,688 mm long, 1,860 mm, 1,695 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, and be offered with Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) powertrains.

Other models in the Lepas line-up include the L6 and L4, both of which were also present at GIIAS 2025. All three adopt the ‘Leopard Aesthetic’, with notable design cues being slim daytime running lights meant to evoke a leopard’s focused eyes.

Elsewhere, three distinctive lines on the vehicles’ sides refer to the muscles of the big cat’s front arms, hind legs and lower abdomen. The smooth and simple surfacing are said to be inspired by pottery. On the inside is a simple dashboard design featuring a flowing centre console that leads to a large, portrait-format touchscreen, which is said to evoke a “waterfall following downwards.”

In case you need a reminder, the name ‘Lepas’ should be pronounced as ‘leap-pass’ and not ‘le-pas’. This is because it fuses the words ‘leap’ or ‘leapord’ with ‘passion’. With Lepas coming in, Chery Malaysia will further expand its portfolio which already includes its own models as well as those from Omoda | Jaecoo and iCaur (known as iCar in China).

  • Why couldn’t Chery change its name for the local market? Very poor product planning. Localizing the name is quite a common exercise.
