Mercedes-Benz has announced it has built its 600,000th G-Class at its production line in Graz, Austria, with the milestone vehicle being a fully electric G580 with EQ Technology finished in obsidian black metallic.
Originally developed as a military vehicle, the Geländewagen was offered as a civilian vehicle in 1979 and gained a growing fan base to become the icon it is today. Along the way, there have been a few special editions, with a recent one being the G-Class Stronger Than the 1980s that references the one-off 500,000th G-Class that rolled off the production line in 2023.
To meet the personalisation demands of customers, Mercedes-Benz offered its Manufaktur service for the G-Class in 2019. This has proven to be a success, as over 90% of G-Class customers now choose at least one Manufaktur option, with the average being three per vehicle.
“Manufaktur also fulfils the increasing demand from G‑Class customers for heritage paint colours and exclusive shades inspired by iconic designs. Since 2024, it has been possible to choose from up to 20,000 paint colours,” the company said in its release.
Alongside the S- and E-Class, the G-Class is one of the longest-produced passenger car model series in Mercedes-Benz history. From its humble beginnings as a commercial vehicle, the G-Class has evolved in the past four decades to become a lifestyle and luxury symbol.
Even so, it maintains its reputation as a formidable off-roader by sticking to a ladder-frame chassis, differential locks and all-wheel drive. The design elements haven’t changed too much either, with the boxy shape being paired with round headlamps asa well as an exposed spare wheel on a side-hinged rear door.
