There is no delay to Keretapi Tanah Melayu‘s (KTM) Segamat-Johor Bahru electrification and double-tracking project (ETDP), transport minister Anthony Loke has said, according to a report by The Star.
“It is inaccurate to say that there is a delay. In fact, I have said a few months ago that the project will be completed in phases. The first phase was the opening of Gemas to Segamat in March.
“The second phase will be from Segamat to Kluang, which we intend to open before August 31,” he said to media after opening the ASEAN-China International Rail Transit Forum 2025 this morning, adding that the project remains on track and that the third phase, Kluang-JB Sentral, will be ready by year-end.
Loke did however say that the government is awaiting confirmation from a “very important person” who is to be given the honour of driving the first ETS train to Kluang, when asked when Segamat-Kluang ETS services would commence.
On the recent KLIA aerotrain interruption (again), Loke said: “We acknowledge the weakness, and are regretful. We have told Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd to see to it with the contractor. It is a 15-minute interruption caused by a software bug, and is not a mechanical fault.”
The completion of the 192-km Gemas-JB Sentral ETDP will allow ETS trains to travel the entire length of the West Coast Line. New Class 94 ETS3 trainsets have been procured, and according to Loke, the first unit just completed testing.
