Genting Malaysia should refrain from using the word “toll” to describe its proposed road charges on vehicles using Jalan Genting Highlands in the future, said deputy works minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. He said that doing so could cause confusion as the term is usually associated with highway charges and would make it seem like a government project, when the initiative is a private project, the Malay Mail reports.
“Since it’s a private road and, as the ministry mentioned before, it will be under the state and local councils’ purview, I hope if they do decide to go ahead, they don’t use the word toll. It can be confused with the 33 other existing toll concessionaires. Maybe they can change it to vehicle charges,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.
Genting Malaysia had on November 13 announced that it would soon impose private road charges on vehicles entering Jalan Genting Highlands, with details on this to be revealed at a later date. The company said the move to impose a road charge was necessary due to the steep and escalating costs of maintaining the 24 km-long private road and its slopes, which it said has been borne solely by the company since the 1960s.
It said that heavy usage of Jalan Genting Highlands has resulted in a “tremendous amount of wear and tear,” and requires constant maintenance to ensure the safety of the road users. It added that the private road charge is the most sustainable path to defray the cost of upkeep, repairs, maintenance and other unforeseen incidents.
Ahmad said that those who want to go up to the resort for some entertainment should be charged, but hopes the price will be reasonable, because if it was not, it could deter tourists. He suggested that Genting staff, residents and landowners along the route should be exempt from these charges. “Perhaps those with land there, the staff working up there and even those living there, as well as those going to Institut Aminuddin Baki, don’t need to be charged,” he said.

It’s like going into a mall parking lot where everything is maintained by the mall owner and they charge a parking fee.
If you think the fee is expensive, then go somewhere else.
By the way, maintaining a mountain pass is not cheap. It is up to Genting to give special passes to staff and property owners.
The mall owner not collecting rent from tenants ah? Another cash grab by a world increasingly run by MBA’s. At some point the insane chase for profitability and shareholder returns will outweigh the value proposition of the business in the first place.
good example. yes, just like private malls charging a fee to use their parking, genting also has the rights to charge a fee to use their private roads.
But malls dont charge me for walking into their shops now do they? So why do this? If want to talk about parking charges, Genting is already charging arms legs & both kidneys to park there.
every single mall charges parking fees
This is not talking about parking here, this is about going in which should be free. Do you even use brain to type this BS?
This is like employees
supposed to serve the company,
nowadays, company needs to “kowtow”
to the employees and pay them salary
Property owners doesn’t pay Genting anything also. Maybe can proposed monthly/yearly passes to them?
just like how Islamic banking cannot use the word “interest” but use “profit sharing”?
The extra you pay to the bank call interest; the money you to the landlord call rental. You see the difference?
What is their profit after tax (PAT)? Then is the Chateau in Bukit Tinggi, is it a private road as well? If it is, why are they not imposing this? If you say volume of visitors, Genting has way more visitors compared to them. Pity to those who live and work there.
its a free market, if those who live and work there dont like it then they are free to vote with their feet and leave.
genting case is a bit different as the road did not exist beforehand, it was constructed by genting themselves.
It’s a good thing that they are charging. Less B40 buat semak there.
motorbikes probably toll- free, if look at how current toll booth works. Ppl still can ride bikes to enjoy the chill & scenery. So ur assumption may not correct!
Then why the fuss about the toll?
Bcoz its the M40 car users making noise here bodo
M40 did not make noise. It’s the B40 thinking they are M40 are the one making noise. They really think they belong to M40 or even T20, wanting to buy a Skyline at RM1700+300 OT salary.
It would be good for Genting Malaysia to show the cost of road maintenance each year for the past 10-20 years and see if it really is such a big expense compared to their profit. They’ve already started to charge parking fee for hotels (previously FOC) so this road charge just sounds like cost cutting method to improve profit
The Genting founder (previous boss) did not have this issue, but his younger generation does… initiating parking fees, privatize business (pulling out from Bursa), and now building tolls, total failure of running the business.
the differnce is , last time genting had a virtual monopoly on casino gaming. nowadays there are many other competitors and options
dont forget, this land belongs to who
the toll will deter biforti from driving their perodua/proton up , then setting up a fire bbq to cook food at the petrol station
i invested half million ringgit to buy genting new launch development property project, will genting give me toll rebate? asking for a friend
i regularly lose lots of money in casino, can i get toll rebate from genting ? asking for a friend
A shit by any other name will smell just as stinky.
