Car Buyer's Guide

Overview

The Mazda CX-8 is a D-segment SUV for families who want three rows without stepping up to the much dearer CX-80. Launched in this KG-generation form in 2022, it comes as a petrol or diesel model, with six- or seven-seat layouts. Prices start from RM165,360 for the 2.5 Mid 2WD.

CX-8 in 2026 — what's new

The CX-8 carries on into 2026 unchanged. Its latest movement is the 2025 Mazda SUV price revision, which cut the CX-8 by RM20,000. The current Malaysian range runs from the 2.5 Mid 2WD to the 2.5 Turbo High Plus AWD, with 2.5-litre petrol, 2.2-litre diesel and turbo petrol choices. The newer CX-80 sits above it and is effectively the CX-8’s replacement, but at a much higher price.

Which variant to buy

Most buyers should start with the 2.5 Mid 2WD at RM165,360, because it is the only seven-seat CX-8 and uses the same 2.5-litre 192 hp petrol engine as the higher 2WD petrol variants. The 2.5 High 2WD costs RM171,360 and changes to six seats. The 2.5 High Plus 2WD is RM186,360; on paper you are paying for trim, not mechanicals, so check the equipment list. The 2.2D High Plus 2WD and 2.5 Turbo High Plus AWD cost RM213,123 and RM221,360 respectively.

Verdict

The CX-8 remains the more sensible Mazda three-row SUV if the CX-80’s price is too big a stretch. It is a long-serving, premium-feeling six- or seven-seater, and the range gives buyers petrol, diesel and turbo petrol options. But it is not the cheap pick in this class: the Proton X90, Jetour VT9, Leapmotor C10, Chery Tiggo 8, Chery Tiggo 9 and Omoda Jaecoo C9 all start below or near the CX-8’s entry price.
