• Honda EX5 Dream FI launched in Malaysia – RM4,299

  Boon Siew Honda has unveiled the its latest addition to its dependable kapcai range – the Honda EX5 Dream FI. Billed as a motorcycle “specially designed” for the local market, the EX5 Dream FI supersedes the EX5 Dream 110, launched in 2013. It is the first model in its class to feature Honda’s PGM-FI (programmed fuel injection) technology for improved fuel efficiency and performance.

  The Honda EX5 Dream FI is powered by an air-cooled, four-stroke 110 cc engine which puts out a total of 8.4 hp at 7,500 rpm and 8.4 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. Transmission is that of the four-speed constant mesh variety with a wet-type automatic centrifugal clutch. As for the (adjustable) suspension setup, 81 mm telescopic forks are featured up front with 68 mm twin forks at the rear.

  Compared to its Dream 110 predecessor, the Dream FI boasts a larger 4.3 litre fuel tank. As a result, the Dream FI possesses an operational range of 250.7 km compared to the 214.4 km figure touted by the Dream 110. Fuel consumption is also improved with a 58.3 km/l quoted on the ECE 40 test cycle. The Dream 110 could only manage 53.8 km/l on the exact same test cycle.

  In terms of its dimensions, the EX5 Dream FI measures in at 1,923 mm in length, 696 mm in width and stands at 1,046 mm. Wheelbase is recorded at 1,212 mm. Two variants are available, a kick starter version sits alongside an electric (self) starter model. The former tips the scales at 98 kg while the latter, at 99 kg.

  

  Styling wise, the Honda Dream EX5 FI features a revised headlamp design with the Honda emblem beneath it now marked out in chrome. Elsewhere, a chrome heat cover on the exhaust outlet projects a more premium image while the rear taillamp assembly now feature side indicators with a separate housing – a move made to fulfil UNECE safety regulations for motorcycles.

  Other improvements over the outgoing EX5 Dream model include a reworked instrument cluster for improved legibility in conditions with less than desirable amounts of lighting. Prospective customers can choose from three different colours – Euphoria Red Metallic, Vital Blue Metallic and Mariana Purple Metallic. The latter is a deep violet hue that is almost black under all but the harshest of lighting.

  Prices for the Honda EX5 Dream FI begin at RM4,299 and RM4,529 – the former figure is for the kick starter variant. Prices exclude both GST and on-the-road costs. A two-year/20,000 km warranty is offered. • Harley-Davidson Street 750 launched – RM62,888

  Naza Prestige Bikes has introduced the Harley-Davidson Street 750 in Malaysia – the brand’s new entry-level Dark Custom lineup model is aimed at a new target audience for the brand here, specifically younger urban riders.

  The Street series cruiser – which is assembled in India – is powered by a Revolution X liquid-cooled, 60-degree V-Twin engine, the 750 cc unit good for 56 hp at 8,000 rpm and 59 Nm of twist at 4,000 rpm in terms of output numbers. The mill is mated to a six-speed belt-drive transmission.

  As standard, the bike comes equipped with black seven-spoke cast aluminium wheels, riding on 17-inch x 2.5-inch fronts and 15-inch x 3.5 inch rears. Black is the thematic colour here – the engine and covers are finished in the shade, as are the bike’s front end (fork gators and towers), pull-back handlebar and 2-into-1 upswept exhaust.

  

  The Street 750’s understated, plain look is very much an invitation to customise it, and that’s what Naza Prestige is offering potential customers – the company has introduced a Naza World Customs programme in which a Street 750 can be dressed up any way an owner sees fit. Customised examples were on show at the launch at Harley-Davidson KL earlier today, providing a colourful contrast to the base bike.

  The customisation work is done locally by the company’s HD-trained custom builders, and a job takes about three weeks to complete – currently, there are three packages available as a guideline, but buyers will have the ability to mix and match elements not included in these. The customisation route starts from a basic price of around RM6,000.

  As for the Street 750 itself, the bike is priced at RM62,888 (including GST), and comes with a two-year factory warranty and a three-year/80,000 km extended warranty by Naza Prestige. • Vespa Sprint launched in Malaysia – 3V 150cc, RM15k

  Official importer Naza Premira launched the Vespa Sprint in Petaling Jaya this afternoon. Today’s Vespa Sprint is said to be the spiritual successor of the classic Vespa S, marking the “return” of the Vespino. Nods to the original scooter include the sporty saddle (black cover with white line finish) and signature square headlamps.

  While the Sprint is unmistakably Vespa, there are modern touches to it like the LED daytime running lights, multifunction digital display and redesigned 12-inch aluminium alloy wheels. We think it looks cooler than the LX and LXV, and should be popular with Klang Valley’s growing population of bearded hipsters.

  The Sprint is powered by a 154.8 cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine with three valves (two intake, one exhaust), single overhead cam and electronic fuel injection. It produces 11.7 hp (8.7 kW) and 12 Nm of torque, and is paired to a CVT automatic transmission.

  

  

  Designed in built at Piaggio’s Pontedera plant, the 3V engine is lighter and more fuel-efficient than a two-valve design. A new free-wheel electric starter and dry centrifugal clutch help bring fuel consumption down – at an average speed of 50 km/h, the Sprint will return 64 km/l.

  A redesigned frame means that the battery is moved into the central tunnel of the footrest, freeing up 16.6 litres of space in the helmet compartment. Vibrations are kept at bay by a new engine mounting system made up of two-position arms and a new front suspension that connects to the wheel via a hinged pin instead of screws. It’s equipped with Enhanced Sliding Suspension (ESS), while the brakes are 200 mm discs in front and drums at the back.

  Available in six colours – white, red, grey, blue, yellow and orange – the Vespa Sprint is priced at RM15,028 with GST, or RM15,617 on-the-road with insurance. All Vespa models come with a two-year or 20,000 km warranty.

  At the event, Naza Premira also announced the new Vespa Assist service. Supported by AAM Bikers Assist, Vespa Assist offers 24/7 breakdown assistance, free towing, minor on-the-spot repairs, plus AAM insurance, inspection and valuation services. New owners who register their Vespa after April 1 2015 are entitled to free Vespa Assist for one year. • Honda BULLDOG concept wants to be your best friend

  The Honda BULLDOG concept has just been unveiled at the 2015 Osaka Motorcycle Show. Billed as a rider-friendly study on two wheels, the concept adheres to the theme of what Honda calls the “Lovable Touring Partner” – you have to love the Japanese!

  Powering the motorcycle is a 400 cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke DOHC two-cylinder engine – mated to a six-speed transmission – that’s been tuned to deliver an “easy to handle” power delivery. In staying true to its easy-going nature, the Honda BULLDOG concept rides on 15-inch wheels, front and rear, and its 730 mm seat height ensures a low, stable centre of gravity.

  

  Storage compartments are aplenty with the inclusion of a carrier compartment for “camping-touring” while additional cargo capacity comes courtesy of an “accessory storage” space on either sides of the fuel tank. Styling wise, the motorcycle features simple yet charming cues such as the twin circular head lamps while the body itself possesses a stumpy, grounded stance.

  We’re not so sure about the contrasting turquoise highlights, though. While it may add a bit of colour and flair, it could end up looking like a refugee from the set of a B-grade sci-fi film – moto Tron tak jadi, perhaps?

• 2015 BMW World Malaysia confirmed for April 17-19

  Calling all BMW fans! The 2015 BMW World Malaysia exhibition has been confirmed with an official teaser site of the event now online. Set to take place on April 17 to 19 (from 10 am to 6 pm), the showcase will be held at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort. Tickets are already on sale from RM18.

  The theme for the 2015 show has been billed as “Innovation in Motion,” and will see the launch of six new BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad models. We’ll have to wait and see what these models are.

  For the first-ever BMW World event to be held in Malaysia, the BMW 328 Hommage concept will be brought in and showcased for all to see. Initially unveiled in 2011, the event will also serve as the 328 Hommage’s Asian debut.

  

  The last (and closest, incidentally) BMW World showcase was held in Singapore last year. The event, then themed “Stories in Motion”, showcased models such as the BMW M1, the i3 and i8 pair as well as the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe and models from the MINI and BMW Motorrad brand.

• Highway Code test to be shared by car, motorcycle licence applicants, fees may be lower as a result

  The Transport ministry has decided that car and motorcycle licence applicants will only have to take one Highway Code theory test, according to various reports.

  “Currently, those who wish to get a car or a motorcycle licence have to study the car and motorcycle modules separately, and have to sit for two tests. After receiving complaints (from driving schools), we decided that they would still need to study both the modules separately, but only take a single test,” Transport minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai told The Star.

  He added that the director-general of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has already been requested to issue the directive to all driving schools.

  As a result, JPJ expects the licence fees to go down. “JPJ will implement the system as soon as possible for the convenience of all parties and I think the fee for driving licences will be lower after this,” Bernama quoted director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad as saying.

• Vespa LT 150 3V IE launched in Malaysia – RM9,888

  Naza Premira, the official importer and distributor of the Vespa brand, has launched the new (deep breath) Vespa LT 150 3V IE in Malaysia. Assembled in Vietnam, the new LT 150 comes with an air-cooled, 154.8 cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine with electronic fuel injection.

  Total power output is rated at 12 hp at 7,500 rpm and 12 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. Transmission is of the CVT variety. Stopping power comes courtesy of 140 mm rear drum brake while the up front, a 200 mm disc brake is featured.

  A single arm with helical spring and double-acting hydraulic shock absorber makes up the front suspension setup while the rear comprises of a single shock absorber with adjustable preload feature for four individual settings.

  

  “Vespa Malaysia has seen a vast growth and is gaining tremendous popularity in Malaysia market, with more people recognizing the brand as a lifestyle product rather than just a means of mobility,” said Datuk Wira Haji SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin, Naza Group CEO.

  In keeping with the distinct Vespa styling, the new LT 150 retains the trademark aesthetic appeal while electronic fuel injection improves efficiency by up to 30% when compared to its predecessor. It features a dual-toned saddle with embossed Vespa badging, Italian flags on both sides and signature round headlamp.

  The Vespa LT 150 3V IE is available in two colours – red and orange. Basic selling price is quoted at RM9,888.

• Shell Win Free Fuel – win free fuel for up to one year!

  Shell Malaysia today announced a new contest, dubbed ‘Shell Win Free Fuel’, in which up to 10,000 dedicated customers stand a chance to walk home with a share of over RM2 million worth of free fuel. The contest kicks off on December 23 2014 and will go one for 12 weeks before ending on March 15 2015.

  To participate, patrons are required to purchase a minimum of RM30 worth of any Shell petrol or diesel, including Shell FuelSave and Shell V-Power at any Shell station located across the nation. Following that, it’s as simple as answering one question and attaching the original receipt on the contest form.

  “At Shell Malaysia, we are committed to helping Malaysians make smarter spending choices on the road and in life. We understand that the rakyat are concerned with the rising cost of living, and we see this as an opportunity to ease their burden and give them one less thing to think about,” said Tuan Haji Azman Ismail, managing director of Shell Malaysia Trading and Shell Timur.

• Replacement of documents free for flood victims – JPJ

  In light of the recent floods, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has announced that it will not charge individuals who opt to replace missing/damaged documents including probational licences as well as registration cards and full driver’s licences (CDL).

  Datuk Sri Ismail Ahmad, JPJ director-general, has stated that the initiative was undertaken to provide as much financial aid to the victims as possible. The cost for a replacement copy of a learner’s licence is RM10 with probationary and full driver’s licences rated at RM20. Replacement registration cards for motorcycles and cars are priced at RM20 and RM50, respectively.

  To apply for a replacement, affected individuals need only to show up at respective JPJ quarters with the original damaged paperwork or an issue of a police report made in relation to the missing document(s).

  Here’s something incredible to watch while you wait for the weekend to officially arrive. Gugulotu Lachiram has passion for both yoga and motorcycles, and he’s decided to bring them both together by performing yoga exercises on a moving motorcycle.

  Just watch the video above to see him pull off stunts that will probably put most of our local ‘supermen’ to shame, or perhaps even inspire them. Some of the stunts look physically impossible to pull off – watch out for one where he hangs off the rear of the bike. How does that weight balance even work?

  Of course, we don’t condone doing such stunts on public roads, or for that matter riding in such a manner in the first place. Always remember, safety should always be at the top of your mind – having a helmet on when you’re on a bike, very important!

• Naza launches Aprilia Shiver 750 CKD Edition – RM44k, local-assembly in Malaysia to begin early 2015

  Naza Premira has launched the CKD edition of the Aprilia Shiver 750, and has announced that local assembly of the model by Naza Bikes will begin next year – production will start in January at the Naza manufacturing facility in Shah Alam.

  Malaysia is the first country in which Aprilia has Shiver 750 assembly operations outside of Italy. A total of RM5 million is being invested in the development of the CKD assembly operations, with a further RM1 million set to be devoted to parts inventory.

  The facility in Shah Alam is capable of producing 1,200 units in the initial year of operation, but Naza Premira is targeting a more modest volume, aiming to sell 600 units of the Shiver 750 CKD Edition next year.

  

  

  

  Initially, the locally-assembled units will only be for the Malaysian market, but the company is exploring the prospect of increasing production capacity to between 3,000 to 5,000 units if expansion in the ASEAN region happens. The Shiver 750 CKD Edition will be the only model built here – all other Aprilia models will continue to be imported.

  The naked bike, which will be available in red and black, is powered by a V90 four-stroke longitudinal 90-degree V-twin 750 cc engine offering 95 hp and 81 Nm. Novelties include a Ride by Wire electronic throttle – the Shiver was the first bike in the world to be equipped with the tech when it was introduced in 2007.

• BMW F 800 R gets updated for year 2015; includes power hike, revised styling and ABS as standard

  BMW Motorrad has updated its F 800 R roadster for the year 2015 with an increase of power and the inclusion of a raft of safety features along with minor aesthetics upgrades to bring the motorcycle’s outlook closer to its stablemates.

  The revised 798 cc in-line, two-cylinder engine now produces 90 hp at 8,000 rpm and 86 Nm of torque at 5,800 rpm – an increase of 3 hp with no changes in torque output. Further changes include the shortening of ratios for the first and second gear, allowing for livelier acceleration.

  A new suspension setup in front consisting of an upside-down fork in place of a telescopic one is now featured. At the rear, a cast aluminium dual swing arm is available with the option to adjust the spring preload at the rear central spring strut via a hand wheel.

  

  Front brakes are now a dual-disc – measuring in at 320 mm – setup with the four-piston calipers now being mounted radially to the fork bases. At the rear, a single 265 mm disc is clamped by a single-piston floating caliper. Added safety comes in the form of ABS, fitted here as standard.

  Supplementary electronic aids are available as an option with Automatic Stability Control (ASC) and Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) – the latter available for the first time in this class. ESA allows the rider to adjust compression of the damping of the rear spring strut on the move via a button.

  Of all the changes to take place, a variant with a reduced power output is perhaps the least expected. • Ducati Monster 796 S2R now in Malaysia – RM65k

  Next Bike has added the Ducati Monster 796 S2R to its range. The bike was recently launched at Sepang in conjunction with the Malaysian MotoGP weekend and the third Asia Ducati Week.

  The new Monster 796 S2R, dressed in white with a red racing stripe and red wheels, gets dark finished handlebars and front fork bodies. The 167 kg naked bike is also fitted with the “micro-bikini” fairing and single seat cover as standard. The “comfort-enhancing seat” is further accentuated with red stitching.

  The heart is a Desmodue 796 engine. The crankshaft was designed with a lightweight 848-type flywheel and uses a 66 mm stroke, which maximises power to 87 hp at 8,250 rpm and 78 Nm at 6,250 rpm. The power unit is said to maintain the smooth and enjoyable character of the Desmodromic L-Twin.

  

  

  Twin 320 mm semi-floating discs are gripped by radially mounted four-piston Brembo calipers, while the rear is equipped with a 245 mm disc and two-piston calliper, also by Brembo. ABS, a single-sided swing arm, 43 mm Showa forks up front and a single-sided rear swing arm (controlled by a single rear Sachs unit, with adjustable spring preload and return damping for passenger load optimisation) are the other highlights.

  “Ducati Monster is a very important model to Ducati Malaysia. The Malaysian biking community is strong and very supportive towards the brand and this particular model. With this latest addition of this Monster 796 S2R to the Ducati family, we are confident to achieve our target sales, breaching the 1,000 unit sales target for 2014,” said Datuk Wira SM Faisal, Naza’s joint group executive chairman.

• BMW S 1000 XR revealed at 2014 EICMA motor show

  The BMW S 1000 XR was unveiled at the 2014 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, providing BMW Motorrad with enough ammunition to rival the Ducati Multistrada and the Triumph Tiger Explorer. It features a 1.0 litre, in-line four-cylinder engine derived from the BMW S 1000 R naked bike.

  Power figures are rated at 160 hp at 11,000 rpm and 112 Nm of torque at 9,250 rpm, allowing the motorcycle to hit an official top speed of “over 200 km/h.” The transmission layout features a straight-toothed, constant-mesh six-speed gearbox with an anti-hopping clutch. Weight – with essential fluids – measures in at 228 kg.

  Stopping power comes courtesy of twin 320 mm discs brakes clamped by a four-piston caliper in front and a single 265 mm disc brake gripped by a two-piston, floating caliper at the rear. Front tyres measure in at 120/70/R17 with the rears capping it off at 190/55/R17. Seat height is officially quoted at 840 mm.

  

  In typical BMW Motorrad fashion, the bike is equipped with ABS as standard. In addition, ABS Pro – under the Pro riding modes option – is available. The system builds on the standard ABS feature by allowing for ABS-assisted braking while the bike is angled at speed.

  Extra electronic assistance systems are present in the form of Automatic Stability Control (ASC) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), the latter under the optional Pro riding modes umbrella. Two riding functions, Rain and Road, can be selected by the rider to gain optimal algorithms for the throttle and electronics as standard.

  Suspension setup features an adjustable upside-down fork and double-sided swing arm with adjustable central spring strut, front and rear respectively. • Mercedes-AMG acquires 25% stake in MV Agusta

  We’ve heard about this before but it’s now confirmed – Mercedes-AMG GmbH of Daimler AG and Italian motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta Motor S.p.A. have signed a cooperation agreement on a long-term partnership. The deal also sees Mercedes-AMG acquire a 25% interest in MV Agusta at an undisclosed price, rumoured to be around €30 million (RM124 million). The Germans will get one seat in the board of directors.

  “In MV Agusta, we have found the perfect two-wheel partner for Mercedes-AMG. This manufacturer with a long tradition and Mercedes-AMG are connected not only by a long and successful racing history, but also by shared values and goals for the future – allowing the experience of utmost perfection, optimal performance and motorsport technology for the road,” said Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG.

  “The cooperation with MV Agusta also underscores the importance of AMG as the sports-car and high-performance brand of Mercedes-Benz Cars. The partnership provides us with an entry into a world of additional high-performance enthusiasts,” he added.

  

  Wilko Stark, VP Daimler strategy & Mercedes-Benz Cars product strategy echoed his comments. “The strategic cooperation with MV Agusta will allow us to address high-performance enthusiasts with automobiles and with motorcycles.   Headquartered in Varese, Italy, MV Agusta was founded in 1945 by Domenico Agusta. The company currently employs around 260 people, of whom 90 work in R&D. MV Agusta’s product portfolio is based on two main platforms, comprising three- and four-cylinder models ranging from 675 to 1,100 cc and occupying the supersport, superbike, sports-naked and crossover segments. MV Agusta, once majority owned by Proton who sold it for €1 in 2005, also owns the Cagiva brand.

  Growth has been at a double-digit rate for the past five years and MV Agusta will present new models in the sports-naked segment – the Brutale 800 RR and the Dragster 800 RR – at the next EICMA show. With the all-new Stradale 800 and Turismo Veloce 800 models, the brand will continue its expansion by entering the touring segment for the first time.

  This car-bike marriage thing isn’t new – Audi bought over Italian bikemaker Ducati in 2012. Fans of the brands, what do you think of this partnership?
