Ford X-MAX: Focus with all wheel drive?

Ford’s X-MAX is Ford’s latest 4X4 SUV, based on the Ford Focus platform. It is aimed at the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V – somewhat like the Ford Escape. It’s design cues are mostly based on the Ford Iosis X concept car which was shown at the Paris Motor Show in 2006.

The Ford X-MAX will be available in both two wheel drive and four wheel drive drivetrains. The 4WD version will use the Volvo V50 AWD’s transmission system, which operates in front wheel drive mode most of the time until traction is required at the rear. This positions the X-MAX most likely as a mid-range C-segment SUV, as if it is more upmarket Ford would have used the more complex 4WD system found in the Land Rover Freelander 2.

Engine variants would most likely be the same as the Focus, and the top of the range will use Ford and Volvo’s 222 horsepower 2.5 litre inline-5 turbocharged engine.

If this X-Max handles as well as the Ford S-Max and the Focus ST, it will be a real tour de force amongst SUV's and give the higher class ones a good run for their money.

Oh how nice it would be if they sold the Ford Focus ST here. Everything bout the car is perfect except for its "ST" insignia which is often referred to as sanitary towel.

does have slight resemblance to Focus ST…but it looks like its too stiff that it could roll over if driven fast…ugh..cannot imagine….

front looks great but don't know how would its rear fares….. Ford C-Max already cool, wish this X-Max would be cooler!

should use diesel rather than Volvo T5

guess this might be the twin of XC60 ?

Looks very smart. Europe-designed Ford models are really attractive. Forget the typical US-designed models though LOL..ugly as hell…

Nice looking car! I see they have adopted those flowing panel lines from the Mercedes Benzs, and it really mixes well with the front. Put a DuraTorq into this baby and it shall rule the realm of 4×4 SUVs hahaahha! X-Max, nice name too!
