Volvo C30 Electric production begins – first deliveries to leasing customers start in August

Volvo has begun production of its C30 Electric, and initial deliveries to leasing customers, mainly companies, authorities and governmental bodies is expected to begin from August.

The car, which will be delivered to leasing customers throughout Europe including those in Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway – is built on the regular assembly line in the Ghent factory and then transported to Goteborg for installation of the motor, batteries and other model specific electronics.

The C30 Electric has an operating range of up to 150 kilometres per full charge – charging can be done via a regular household power socket, with a full recharge taking about seven hours. The car has a 130 kph top speed and does the 0-100 kph sprint in 10.9 seconds.

Tests on a fleet of about 50 cars have been conducted since September 2010, mainly internally at the Volvo Car Corporation. In terms of production, about 250 cars will be built by end 2012, possibly more if market interest takes off, the company says.

My efficient diesel car will use up 10l of diesel to travel 150km which is around RM18

My not so efficient 2.0 petrol car will use up 15l of petrol to travel 150km which is around RM28.50

The C30 electric’s 24kwh battery costs around RM8 per full charge for 150km assuming the current TNB rate of 34 sen/kWh.

Someone please correct my calculations if my assumptions are wrong but from what I see a fully electric car can save a huge amount of money on fuel not to mention pollution/emission although those batteries aren’t so environmentally friendly…

The charging outlet from the front is the best location. Imagine having the charging point at the usual fuel lid location. You’ll have longer wires snaking from the power outlet to the side of the car. The situation is worse if, say, the charging point of the car is on the left and the power outlet is on the right. Even longer wire is needed. You could reverse park you car – but why create such a hassle in the first place? Longer wires means more likely for you to trip over. If you have two cars and one is parked and charging, the second incoming car has more chances to roll over them.

In the future, public parking spaces will likely provide charging option (at a fee off course). The above problem is multiplied many times. Shopping carts, kids, people taking short-cuts walking in between the cars are all bound to cause further troubles.

The shorter the wire the better it will be- which means direct entry to the front of the car.

It really looks like it’s having a bleeding nose…or a dripping nose…or some snake/worm went into the nostril…

That being said, sans-worm it’s a great looking car. And the specs are pretty impressive too. If only it wasn’t so mind-bogglingly out of my price range.

5-door hatch = wagon, 3-door hatch = coupe, according to Volvo.

7 hours to get 150km of driving. Such a waste of resources. This is just a PR gimmick.
