Infiniti QX30 concept unveiled at the Geneva show

The wraps have finally come off the Infiniti QX30 concept at the Geneva show, a shapely study previewing a premium compact crossover that’s set to go into production next year.

Expected to retain the QX30 name, the production vehicle will be a high-riding version of the Q30 hatchback, which was previewed by a concept at the 2013 Frankfurt show and which Infiniti says will go into production this year.

Styling cues that emphasise the outdoorsy crossover persona include black wheel arch surrounds, 21-inch wheels shod in large tyres and rugged-looking body addenda – amongst them a satin chrome front bumper with big intakes and dynamic-looking side skirts.

Also on are roof racks that ‘frame’ the rear passengers’ view of the sky, Infiniti’s signature crescent-cut C-pillar and a rear skid plate containing twin exhaust outlets. The unique wheel design mixes 3D-milled aluminum and matte rubber material, and who could miss the swoopy swage lines? The head and tail lamps are all LED.

Inside, you’ll find four seats that “have been streamlined for a suspended look.” The materials used provide a visual feast of colour – there are Connolly saddle and quilted leather here and there, as well as customisable LED mood lighting.

Standing at 4,430 mm long, 1,815 mm wide and 1,520 mm tall, with a 192 mm ground clearance, the Infiniti QX30 concept is about 30 mm taller than the Q30 concept, and is built on an aluminium monocoque chassis.

The concept is motivated by a direct-injected, turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine and a seven-speed auto, but Infiniti says the vehicle has been designed for a variety of petrol and diesel powertrains.

Both the upcoming production versions of the Q30 and QX30 are said to be built on Mercedes’ front-wheel drive platform, essentially making them Infiniti’s counterparts for the A-Class and GLA-Class.

When it becomes a road-going reality next year, the QX30 will go up against the GLA, BMW X1 and Audi Q3. Let’s hope it won’t be tamed too much from this – see spyshots of the production vehicle testing here.

You really don’t know car! Iriz’s R&D without Mitsubishi involvement, i.e no connection with any Japanese car!
