The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its annual “Light-Duty Automotive Technology, Carbon Dioxide Emissions, and Fuel Economy Trends” report that ranks manufacturers based on their fleetwide adjusted fuel economy performance, as well as CO2 emissions. This year’s report saw Asian automakers dominate the list of most efficient brands.
The EPA report only considers model year (MY) 2014 cars sold in the country, with MY 2014 fuel economy averaging 10.33 km/l, while CO2 emissions averaged 227 g/km. Preliminary values suggest that most manufacturers will improve in MY 2015 as well, though these projections are uncertain, as the EPA does not have final MY 2015 data until next year’s report.
On to the number crunching then, with Mazda topping the charts this year, with an average fuel economy rating of 12.5 km/l, an improvement of 0.55 km/l from the year before (11.95 km/l). CO2 emissions also saw a decline to 188 g/km from 196 g/km. This is followed by Subaru (11.73 km/l; 199 g/km) and Hyundai (11.69 km/l; 201 g/km). The full list, with MY 2015 projections can be viewed here:
As you can tell, only BMW had a better year-over-year improvement, occupying the sixth spot with an average fuel economy of 11.22 km/l, 0.81 km/l less than the year before. C02 emissions also dropped by 16 g/km down to 210 g/km. Note that the US uses miles per gallon (mpg) to measure FC and g/mile to measure C02, instead of our km/l (or l/100 km) and g/km.
American automakers Ford, GM and Fiat-Chrysler meanwhile, occupied the bottom three spots in the top 12 list. However, as the EPA’s report takes into account a fleetwide snapshot, this puts Detroit’s Big Three at an unfair advantage, with pick-up trucks being a major part of their vehicle line-ups. The same can be said about other automakers on the list as well.
For next year’s report, the EPA predicts Mazda to retain its place at the top, with Honda harping in close behind it, followed by Subaru and Nissan (fifth place for MY 2014). With more fuel efficient vehicles and the push for electric vehicles in the future, the EPA expects manufacturers to improve upon their results in time for next year’s report.
Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
by brand, is not fair.
Mazda dont have full size truck, full size sedan and so on..
And Mazda is the only one on the list without a hybrid, EV and diesel selling in the US.
Toyota miles behind Mazda/ Honda/ Nissan
But Mazda tops list without benefit of hybrid or electric vehicle in its line-up.
Toyota got beaten by Kimchi… hahahahaha
dinosaur engine 4 speeder rubbish
Lots of prius sold in the US yet, T still FC very high
Polluted the world too with much CO2
The least power too..
lol..toyota
HAHAHAHAHA TOYOTA
i like subaru…
Proton should buy engines from Mazda.
American will always have high fuel consumption vehicle due to the fact that they love their V8 and musclecar
Well done mazda skyactiv nowande my mazda 3 fc better ti my old waja …
You made the right choice. Mazda Skyactive is the best to merge both power and efficiency.
Mazda prove to the world that there’s still territory remianed to be explored in the good’ old NA while the rest of the world obssesively fell into the bandwagon of force inductions and downsizing.
Nothing to shout about, even CFE gets better FC than old waja. And that”s on Exora that is much heavier than Mazda3.
People talk about global player with exceptional engine technology refinement. Jaguh Kampung with slap-on, fuel guzzling turbo without any VVT pergi main jauh-jauh. Jangan sibuk kat sini.
One more thing, that stupid cam tak pro CFE can’t even meet euro 5 standard. So jaguh kampung, lu duduk diam diam, jangan bising.
VW is not on the list? Is it because the VW group also includes Bentley and Lamborghini which are not exactly fuel efficient vehicles. Having said that, Fiat Chrysler is here (though last) probably because Ferrari and Maserati is in the group.
If they counted motorcycles, Honda and BMW would probably go top.
Even better to drive than the boring, dull & soulless metal box called T*¥•#@
Haters will forever hate.
While Mazda has a simple line up of 6 models (3, 6, cx3, cx5, cx9 and mx5) Toyota has a lot more and this include big engine trucks missing in mazda showroom
Go to Toyota us line website you will find
1. Yaris
2. Corolla
3. Camry
4. Avalon
5. Sienna
6. Tundra
7. Tacoma
8. 4runner
9. Land cruiser
10. Prius
Among others. Again, sad to see readers here not able to justify on a proper base of judgment.
Many still laugh at Aston martin for making the cygnet model without knowing that is the reason to bring down co2 average produced by Aston martin
Congrats Mazda. Yet another proud moment for Asian motoring.
This news is a debunk to the myth of “force induction and downsizing means more fuel efficiency”.
Turbocharging is only fuel efficient only when you drive it until the threshold of the turbo starts spooling, once the turbo kicks in, you can practically throw fuel efficiency out of the window.
Mazda skyactive engine is great on fuel efficiency because it can seamlessly switch between the Arkintson cycle and Otto cycle cumbustion by cleverly altering its vvt configuration. This is Mazda’s most price techincal achievment that they can be truly proud of.
In fact, Mazda has unlock the technical barrier to merge both Arkitson and Otto cycle in a single engine to produce great efficiency and power that is unmatch by any other car maker (at least in the natural aspirated category). Even Toyota has to learn a thing or two from Mazda on how to make a engine that can perfectly sync both Arkintson and Otto cycle combustion, this is because engine with good Arkitson cycle is much needed in hybird cars. (Toyota will share its fuel cell knowledge with Mazda in exchange, something Mazda is still very lack of )
I salute Mazda phylosophical adherence to NA and still able to achieve great techical competency through its Skyactive lineup. Those guys in Hiroshima are great even though they’re much smaller and not as resourceful compared to T & H. Kudos to Mazda, you guys have done it.

Mazda no power. Boring.
What makes you say that? Current gen Mazda’s are definitely more spirited than the boring Honda & Toyotas which are targeted to the mass market.
Toyota always cheating in FC, that’s y u won’t see any FC data in brochure.
You knowlah, FC for their best selling taik car:
Lab test FC : Same or lower than VeeVaa/Axiah
but
Real world FC : Higher than poor ‘camprong’ engine
As u can see international use what unit to represent FC instead of most Malaysian use 0.xx cents/km.
0.xx cents/km is MC not FC. Pls learn n know how to calculate.
Subaru is the most outstanding here because all their models are AWD. They can get award for most fuel efficient in AWD segment, no wonder subaru got 2 years in a row for best resale value in US
