Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has announced that it will participate in the Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy Program (CARS) in the Philippines.

Upon its approval to participate in the government initiative to revitalise the auto industry, Mitsubishi has said that it would expand its local production operations in the Philippines to include the Mirage hatchback and Attrage sedan (known as the Mirage G4 there) by 2017.

Currently, the Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation’s (MMPC) Santa Rosa Plant produces just the Mitsubishi Adventure SUV (a.k.a. Freeca in Taiwan and China, or Kuda in Indonesia) and the L300 van. The Mirage and Attrage (G4) are models that are currently imported from Thailand.

On top of adding two new models to its local assembly lines, Mitsubishi will also invest a further 4.3 billion pesos (RM372 mil) at its Santa Rosa plant to build a new stamping plant. Further investment and employment is expected as well, in line with the increased production capacity.

“Mitsubishi Motors has been engaged in the production and sales business in the Philippines for over 50 years. The Philippines is one of the most important markets for us. It is indeed a great pleasure for Mitsubishi Motors to be able to contribute to the automotive industry of the Philippines facing a new development phase,” said Osamu Masuko, chairman and CEO of MMC.

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) began assembly operations at its new manufacturing plant in Santa Rosa in January 2015. The facility, located 45 km from Manila, has the capacity to produce up to 50,000 units per year, exceeding its old Cainta plant’s 30,000 units per year capability, which began assembling Mitsubishi vehicles in 1964.
