Volvo V90 Cross Country to debut in mid-September

Volvo has revealed that the successor to the XC70, the all-new V90 Cross Country, will soon make its global debut later this month. “Cross Country has become the true expression of a Volvo car in many peoples’ eyes. It was a winning concept from the start, perfect for the tough climate and road conditions that we experience in Sweden,” said Hakan Samuelsson, president & CEO of the Volvo Car Group.

The rugged V90 CC will expand the 90 Series line-up further, which currently includes the S90 sedan, V90 estate (pictured here) and XC90 SUV. It will adopt the company’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), and be offered with a range of petrol and diesel engines.

Volvo’s plug-in hybrid Twin Engine T8 powertrain will likely be offered too, as they currently are on the rest of the 90 Series models. The Cross Country models have always been designed to cope with the demanding requirements of an extreme Scandinavian landscape, featuring a raised ride height and additional body cladding for protection.

“We were very careful from the very beginning to ensure that the Cross Country concept was not just an exercise in rugged styling. We placed high demands on real-world capability, and as we developed the segment we added the comfort and convenience elements that Volvo drivers have come to expect,” said Peter Mertens, senior vice president research & development at Volvo Car Group.

Given this requirement, the V90 CC will likely arrive as an all-wheel drive model only, although we’ll have to wait for the vehicle’s official reveal for more details. The predecessor to the V90 CC is the V70 Cross Country, which was later renamed to the XC70 in keeping with the introduction of the first-gen XC90. The XC90 gained recognition around the globe as Zlatan Ibrahimovic´s car thanks to a commercial featuring the Swedish footballer. A worthy replacement for his V90, maybe?
