Here’s one the dictators have been waiting for. The Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullman has been given the bulletproof treatment, and is now known as the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullman Guard, made for heads of state and other individuals at particular risk, according to its maker.
The Pullman Guard provides VR9 class resistance protection (in transparent and non-transparent areas) and is certified for blast resistance in accordance with Directive ERV 2010. Its protection concept is based on that of the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard, the shorter limo. The 6.5-metre, 5.1-tonne Pullman Guard has been designed and developed together with the regular Pullman and provides the same interior dimensions as the one without body armour.
At the body shell stage, protective components of special steel are integrated into the cavities between the body structure and the outer skin. Special aramid and PE components provide additional splinter protection. Intelligent overlapping systems at particularly critical points provide comprehensive ballistic protection.
The glass areas are an essential part of the protective concept. They are coated with polycarbonate on the inside for splinter protection, and have outstanding optical characteristics thanks to their laminated structure. The glazing is of special significance for safety and particular attention has been paid to it in terms of the choice of material and thickness.
A steel bulkhead positioned behind the seats secures the head area of the VIPs. From the outside, the special protection equipment is barely discernible, like on all S-Class Guard models. As far as blasts are concerned, the Pullman Guard has floor armouring covers relevant areas of the underbody. Sirens, flashing lamps, two-way radios, an emergency starter battery and an external communication system (loudspeaker/microphone) can be specified.
Like the regular VV222 Pullman, the Guard is powered by a 6.0 litre twin-turbo V12 engine with 530 hp and 830 Nm from 1,900 rpm. This very luxurious tank’s top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h.
The list price of the Pullman Guard in Germany is just under 1.4 million euros (RM6.45 million), which is significantly more than the starting price of the non-armoured version, which is around 500k euros. The first Guards will be delivered in the second half of 2017.
