Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard debuts – VR10 armour

Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Guard

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Guard. Its latest armoured model is said to be the first civilian vehicle to be certified with the highest ballistic protection level VR10 according to the Directive Bullet Resistant Vehicles (BRV) Version 2.

In short, what that means is that the body and windows of the S 600 Guard are capable of standing up to hardened steel core bullets being fired at it from an assault rifle – think 7.62 x 51 mm Nato rounds, folks. Remember also that the Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard revealed in 2014 was quite impressive itself, but only had a VR9 rating.

Certified by the Ballistics Authority in Ulm, Germany, the S 600 Guard also has a class-leading Explosive Resistant Vehicle 2010 rating. That means that to a certain degree, the vehicle is capable of withstanding explosive attacks from the side and under its body. The actual criteria for this test isn’t something the Ballistics Authority reveals publicly.

Apart from its ballistics protection, Mercedes-Benz claims that the average person wouldn’t be able to tell the Maybach S 600 Guard model from a regular one. It measures precisely the same as a standard Maybach does and offers the same luxuries, too.

That said, the S 600 Guard’s protective capabilities are provided by a specially reinforced body and base structure. The windows are fixed and are coated with polycarbonate on the inside for splinter protection.

All these elements also make the limousine a perfect getaway vehicle. Mercedes-Benz says that despite taking on heavy fire, the S 600 Guard was designed to remain mobile after an attack and exit the area.

To do that, drivers of the model will be able to call upon the vehicle’s 6.0 litre V12 biturbo engine which is good for 530 hp and 830 Nm of torque. The standard vehicle’s 4.7-second century sprint time may be compromised somewhat by the additional protective gear here, but we reckon that it’s still quite capable of a quick getaway.

The Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Guard is priced at 470,000 pounds sterling (RM2.8 million), and joins the Mercedes-Benz Guard range that also includes the G 500 Guard, GLE Guard and the S-Class Guard.
