Seen undergoing on-circuit testing a few months earlier, the next, D5-generation Audi A8 has now been spotted testing in winter, with the eventual product confirmed for debut next year.
Still wearing full-body camouflage here as before, the upcoming Audi A8 is built upon the MLB Evo platform which formed the basis of the current Audi Q7 SUV, and is set to benefit from siginificant weight savings – up to 300 kg, in the case of its platform sibling, the Q7.
With the MLB Evo platform, the next-gen A8 will benefit from the 48V electrical architecture which graces the SQ7 TDI and the Bentley Bentayga, and as such will open the door to electrification including a plug-in hybrid powertrain, possibly also with a fully-electric version.
For the upcoming A8, Audi aims to improve on the two largely conflicting chassis dynamics goals of ride comfort and handling prowess, with more steering feel and more compliant suspension settings where appropriate, according to an Autocar report. That said, the flagship sedan from Ingolstadt is expected to make its debut next year at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
