VW give thumbs up to new F1 engine rules – joining soon?

Volkswagen has managed to resist the temptation of joining Formula 1 so far. As recent as early this month, the new Porsche boss Matthias Mueller “ruled out” the series.

“F1 is a drivers’ world championship, with the focus on the sponsors and the manufacturers only secondary. For us, this is a clear drawback for such a long-term investment, as is the unclear rules for the future. (But) if the VW Group was interested, then Porsche would surely be the brand that would work best for this,” he told German newspaper Westfalen Blatt.

But the new rules that limit engines to 1.6-litre four-cylinder units in 2013 could be thing that changes VW’s mind. When asked, VW Motorsport’s Hans-Joachim Stuck spoke of the possibilities.

“We welcome the decision. It is not only great news for F1, but for the whole of motorsport, as it takes the sport in the right direction environmentally. Of course, we have not decided anything, but the conditions for Volkswagen to possibly enter the category have now been created. The engine rules are a good starting point for Volkswagen,” he said.

VW’s motorsport program subscribes to “Resource-saving motorsport” and efficient engines with production-based technology (the brand’s Formula 3 engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder NA engine with ‘just’ 210 hp ). Using bio natural gas engines in the Scirocco R-Cup and at the Nürburgring 24 Hours is proof that “Volkswagen is already in the process of putting the aims of eco-conscious motorsport of the future into action now,” according to VW Motorsport Director Kris Nissen.

Will we see Porsche racing with Ferrari, Mercedes and Lotus in F1 in the near future?

VW teams with Fender for Premium Audio System

Volkswagen of America announced that it has joined forces with Fender, the maker of iconic Strat and Tele electric guitars, to equip selected 2012 models with the all-new Fender Premium Audio System. The new Jetta GLI will be the first to get the system, developed exclusively for Volkswagen, before other Jettas, the new 2012 midsize sedan and 2012 Beetle receives it.

The Fender Premium Audio System is a collaboration between Fender and Panasonic. Claimed to “deliver uncompromised clarity, regardless of volume, with a unique sound that Americans will love”, the nine-speaker system took three years to develop.

It features proprietary Panasonic speaker technology that covers the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers that generate imaging beyond the capabilities of traditional speaker designs. It cuts through noise with front dual voice coil speakers, with extended range for all musical genres. The design features lower inter-modulation distortion and smooth mid-range response to eliminate harshness. It is harmonically complex, with extended range tweeters and properly voiced 16 cm speakers revealing original instrumentation timbre and harmonic richness.

“The best seat in the house is now behind the wheel of a Volkswagen. Our two iconic companies – one with a passion for driving, one with a passion for music – are joining forces to bring the raw emotion of live music to the driving experience,” said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America.

Porsche to build VW Group’s sports car, big car platforms

The newly adopted kid in the Volkswagen family, Porsche, has been given an enviable slice of the cake, leaving the others (especially Audi, which is a consistent top performer in the school of sales) green with envy. The cake in question is the development of future models, and Weissach’s meal includes the sports cars and big luxury cars.

Automotive News reports that Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn has told Porsche that it will take the lead in developing the “modular standard matrix” that will underpin the future Panamera and Bentleys. Porsche will also be responsible for a new sports car platform (for both front-mid and rear-mid engines) that will be shared with the likes of Audi and Lamborghini. This allays fears that the 911 of tomorrow will be sitting on a VW platform.

The report also says that the recent announcement that Porsche will invest 150 million euros in its R&D centre in Weissach plus the hiring of 100 engineers is linked to this responsibility.

Audi will continue to develop the “modular longitudinal matrix,” first introduced in 2007 for the A4, A5 and Q5. The number of models to use this architecture will grow to 15, Winterkorn said. The VW brand on the other hand, will focus on what it does best, that is to take charge of a “modular transverse matrix” that will debut on the 2012 Audi A3 and the next gen Golf. This platform will underpin 40 models and 6 million units annually, providing the numbers in VW’s quest to rule the auto world.

This so called “modular toolkit strategy” is a key strategy in giving VW a competitive advantage in its bid to topple Toyota as leader in sales and profitability. It is said to reduce development, procurement and production costs by 20% and engineered hours by 30%, besides allowing for more variants without the high costs.

VW introduces LED combination headlamps for the Golf

Golf LED lamp 1

Neat news for MkVI Golf owners – following on the LED tail lamps introduced by Volkswagen for the car a year ago, the company has now debuted bi-Xenon with LED combination headlamps as an option for the vehicle.

The LEDs are integrated into the main headlights, with 15 diodes each helping to create a three-dimensional optical light bracket. Besides the advantages of improved visibility from the daytime running lights, there’s no doubting that many a Golf GTI owner will find the bling a visible improvement.

Going from 1,310 euros for the Golf, the LED combination bi-Xenon headlamps are also available as an option for the likes of the Polo, Touran and Touareg.

Looks like buyers of the Golf TSI and the Golf GTI here have some aesthetical upgrades to think about – these LED lamps and the LED tail lamps as well!

VW to invest 51.6 bil euros in next five years – the aim is to be the No1 automaker in the world by 2018

Volkswagen is planning to invest around 51.6 billion euros in its automotive division over the next five years. More than half of this investment will be in Germany, with primary spending to be on property, plants and equipment, it said in a statement.

It’s no secret that the VW is aiming at surpassing Toyota as the top carmaker globally by 2018, and as such, the Strategy 2018 programme it has set out will see the company investing around 27.7 billion euros to modernise and extend the product range of all its brands, these being VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Bentley, Porsche and Lamborghini.

The focus will of course be on new vehicles, derivatives and replacement models in all product classes, and the aim is to achieve a systematic model rollout with a view to tapping new markets and segments. This will be supplemented with the launching of new generations of engines with enhanced performance, fuel consumption and emission levels. In particular, it will drive forward the development of hybrid and electric motors.

Additionally, a 13.6 billion euro has been set aside for cross-product investments over the next five years. The company’s new assembly plant in the US – in Chattanooga, Tennessee – will begin operating in 2011, and production capacity in Russia is also being increased. It has also announced plans to open two more plants in China.

Revised Volkswagen Eos breaks cover in LA

Vw eos 1

As scheduled, Volkswagen has lifted the veil on its revised Eos coupé cabriolet at the LA Auto Show. The facelift, featuring a wide range of technical and visual enhancements, will begin selling in Europe from mid-January and in the US from the end of March 2011.

The exterior design revisions – a reprofiled bonnet, new grille (complete with chrome highlights), headlamps with LED running lights and reworked bumper with new airdams and fog lights in front and new tail lamps at the rear – brings the Eos into line with the latest iteration of VW’s design language as seen applied to the new Polo, Passat and Sharan.

vw eos 2

A range of powertrains abound, including a 1.4 litre TSI with 122 or 160 PS, a 210 PS 2.0 litre TSI unit as well as 140 PS 2.0 litre TDI engine. BlueMotion Technology variants will also be available featuring Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems.

As previously, the facelift features an advanced five-piece folding roof with an integrated tilt sliding glass sunroof that takes 25 seconds to actuate fully, though the difference from before is that going from a closed coupé to an open cabriolet can now be carried out remotely via the key fob, that is if the car is specified with Keyless Entry. Park Assist will also be available for the first time on the Eos.

vw eos 3

Inside, new trim finishes enhance the interior of the Eos, and highlights include a leather multi-function steering wheel, an eight-speaker CD stereo system and sports seats. Also available as an option is ‘cool leather,’ which reflects the sun’s rays to prevent it heating up as conventional leather does.

VW Golf blue-e-motion to get 2014 market introduction

blue emo 1

Volkswagen has announced that it has set 2014 for the market introduction for its Golf blue-e-motion. The electric car is certainly going great guns as is in its current prototype form, having recently taken the overall winner title from the judges at the inaugural RAC Future Car Challenge. It also won in its category, Most Economic and Environment Friendly Regular Passenger EV.

The front-’engined,’ front-wheel drive concept features a lightweight 80 kg electric motor with a peak power output of 85kW (114 hp) and 270Nm of torque, driving an EQ210 single-speed transmission. The Golf blue-e-motion has a range of around 150 km under normal conditions, with a 135 kph top speed and 0-100 kph sprint time of 11.8 seconds being other figures.

blue emo 3

Juice is provided by 30 battery modules consisting of 180 lithium-ion cells (with an energy capacity of 26.5 kWh) installed in the floor of the boot (which reduces the cargo volume to 275 litres), under the rear bench seat and in the centre tunnel of the underbody between the front seats, with a separate air cooling system to ensure a constant thermal environment in the battery compartment. The vehicle’s charging plug connector sits behind the folding VW logo on the radiator grille. With the battery-weight of 315 kg factored in, the five-door blue-e-motion tips the scales just 205 kg more than a comparable Golf BlueMotion TDI with DSG.

The electric Golf offers individual choices in battery regeneration intensity – essentially, the driver has the option of pre-setting the braking energy recovery strategy over four stages (D to D3) via the automatic gearshift lever or gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

blue emo 4

In the lowest stage (D), the car sails as soon as the driver’s foot leaves the electric pedal, with the Golf only being slowed by the rolling resistance of the tyres and air resistance. In the D3 stage, or B for braking, the maximum amount of kinetic energy is recovered and fed to the battery.

In addition, an active driving profile can be set, allowing the driver to prioritise between maximum range, maximum comfort and maximum dynamics. The selected profile then pre-configures the power of the electric motor, air conditioning control, maximum speed and battery regeneration strategy.

blue emo 2

Three profiles are available – Normal, Comfort+ and Range+. Comfort+ offers the full 85 kW (114 hp) of power, and in this mode the Golf blue-e-motion can get to the specified top speed of 135 kph. In normal mode, power is reduced to 65 kW (87 hp) and top speed is lowered to 115 kph, while Range+ mode the engine controller limits power to 50 kW (67 hp).

Honda CR-Z is Japan Car of the Year, Polo is best import

Honda’s CR-Z is the 2010-2011 Japan Car of the Year! The hybrid coupe was announced the best of the year by the 60 strong Executive Committee comprising Japanese motoring journalists at the Waseda University Memorial Hall. It looks as if to get near the prize, the car has to be a hybrid – the Toyota Prius edged out Honda’s Insight in last year’s contest.

The jury appreciated the CR-Z’s hybrid tech and its fun to drive character. The Import Car of the Year award goes to the Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI, which the judges described as having a “high quality interior and exterior” plus “good fuel economy and powertrain” (translation by Google). The supermini was also praised for having “no compromise on safety equipment”. This win completes a hat-trick for the Mk V Polo, which has already scooped up European and World COTY awards this year.

A special award goes out to the Peugeot RCZ, which is the “future balance of innovative design and driving pleasure” according to the jury.

“We are very proud that the CR-Z has been selected from the strong contenders of new models as the Car of the Year Japan 2010–2011. This award shows that the public has accepted Honda’s aspiration to supply exceptional environmental performance in a fun-to-drive hybrid car at an affordable price, as well as Honda’s desire to spread the joy of owning and driving a car.

“We also believe that this award for the CR-Z reflects the true value of the combined efforts of our business partners and the many others who supported CR-Z development and production. Going forward, Honda intends to bring more joy to an even larger number of customers,” said Honda’s President and CEO, Takanobu Ito.

We’re looking forward to welcome the Honda CR-Z with Malaysian Hospitality, especially with the current favourable tax exemption for hybrids!

Volkswagen’s Up! to make market debut in late 2011

VW Up

According to reports, the production version of Volkswagen’s Up! compact is slated to make its debut in September next year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with the car then going on sale towards the end of 2011. Currently, the car is going through its final prototype phase, with pre-production next on the cards.

The first version to come about in the range will be a three-door hatch, with a five-door hatch among the other variants planned. Powertrain choices for the vehicle – which will be made in Slovakia at the VW plant in Bratislava – will be three-cylinder petrol and diesel units, and for starters the production Up! will feature conventional transmissions, followed by a dual-clutch box later.

Vw up 1

Originally, the concept was planned as a rear-engined offering, but the production version is expected to feature a front-mounted engine to keep production costs down.

An electric version of the car – based on the Up! blue-e-motion, no doubt – is planned for introduction in 2013, which is when the electric Golf and Jetta variants are also due to make their market debut.

New VW Touareg spotted, confirmed to be coming soon!

This second-generation Volkswagen Touareg was spotted at a petrol station along Jalan Gasing in PJ. As the number plate has the square block letters/numbers typical of Volkswagen Group Malaysia cars and the holder has the “Volkswagen Das Auto” mark on it, this car has to be from the official source. A call to VGM confirmed that it is indeed their car and that Touareg sales will start next year.

There’s plenty of good news. The new Touareg will be priced the same as the outgoing model at RM437,283 OTR without insurance, but the equipment list will be much more comprehensive. We will get Volkswagen’s Area View system, which provides a 360 degree top view of the car’s surroundings, courtesy of cameras in the front, rear and at each wing mirror. The feed is then “stiched” together to aid parking and driving in tight situations. There will also be navigation and an electric tailgate, among other kit.

We will get a single variant, which is the 3.6-litre FSI V6, although VGM has plans to bring in the Touareg Hybrid at a later date. This 280 PS/360 Nm engine will be paired to an 8-speed torque converter automatic ‘box with paddle shifters. Kerb weight is 2103 kg, and spec for spec, this new model is 200 kg lighter than the old car, despite not using the latter’s plastic fenders and aluminium bonnet. 0-100 km/h is done in 7.8 seconds on to a 228 km/h top speed so this is a fast SUV.

We’ve managed to secure a test unit, so watch out for the test drive report.
