Proton is making plans to manufacture low-end Lotus cars in Malaysia in late 2007 or 2008, and both Lotus and Proton management have agreed with this plan.
The companies are currently identifying the specifications for the car, the pltform to work with and the target market. Lotus cars are priced between RM300,000 to RM400,000, but this new low-end Lotus car would be priced around the RM100,000 range. If this plan works out, this would be truly “my first Lotus” for alot of people who want to experience Lotus engineering and power through lightness concept.
It could be a lower-end sports car than the very basic Lotus Elise, or could be something else out of the Lotsu norm like the Lotus APX.

Comments express skepticism and concern over Proton's plan to develop a low-end Lotus sports car, with some feeling it may be a watered-down or poorly built version of original Lotus models. Many emphasize the importance of quality, affordability, and practicality, criticizing Proton's past quality issues and questioning whether Malaysians truly need another sports car, especially at a high price. There are suggestions that Proton should leverage Lotus's engineering strengths to produce more reliable, affordable passenger cars or MPVs instead of focusing on low-end sports models. Some support the idea if the car stays true to Lotus’s minimalist, lightweight philosophy, but overall, most comments highlight doubts about Proton's ability to produce a true, high-quality, low-cost Lotus while expressing frustration with their current offerings and strategy.
