The 2011 season’s opening race scheduled to happen on March 13th 2011 at Bahrain has been called off thanks to anti-government protests in the kingdom, ending a week of question marks on whether the race would proceed or not.
Bahrain has been on the F1 calendar since 2004. No new race date has been set, and the next GP is supposed to be on the 27th of March in Melbourne.
“We felt it was important for the country to focus on immediate issues of national interest. At the present time the country’s entire attention is focused on building a new national dialogue for Bahrain. I would like to extend my personal gratitude to Bernie Ecclestone for his support and understanding,” said Bahrain Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad al Khalifa.
There is no word on what will happen after this but we could see the Bahrain GP rescheduled and moved further down the F1 calendar.

Malaysia just became the season opener without forking out £12 mil what Bahrain is forking out to have it be the 1st track of the season. But then F1 will come later in April
Opps, read news-now season opener is Australia-not Malaysia
Dude, did you not read the article? It clearly states that the season opener would be Melbourne on the 27th March 2011.
Missed it-human error XD
It not been canceled but apparently Bahrain GP will be postponed and will not be the opening race. It might be back sometime in 2011 or 2012 if the uprising is resolved.
I would rather have the Bahrain GP to be scrapped since its a dull circuit and not much interest among the Bahrain ppl there. It is the interest of their Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa in whose royal family was the cause behind the uprising among the people there.
Still my thoughts to those Bahrains over their difficult period there.
i’ve predicted this outcome since the turmoil started…..
