FT licence plates likely to get an alphabet suffix

FT licence plates likely to get an alphabet suffixBeen wondering what the next set of alphabets will be on a licence plate once the current three alphabet sequence runs out, like in the case of Federal Territory plates, which is already running well into WVA at the moment?

Well, seems that the next sequence isn’t likely to have the new letter tagged at the front (as in WAAA) when WYY finishes its run. In all probability, the letter will be strapped on after the number, like how Sabah and Langkawi does it.

According to a report, Transport Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha said that the ministry is in the midst of choosing the next step from a number of proposals, but isn’t in a rush to implement the new system since it’ll be another few years before the current sequencing runs out. He added that the current proposal is looking to put the additional letter after the numbers, though no final decision had been made.

With the WV sequence followed by WW, WX and WY, which makes four more series to go. Each series has 9,999 numbers; with 23 letters used for licence plates – the letters I and O are not, and Z has been designated for military use only – this adds up to just under 230,000 vehicles covered per series, or close to 920,000 vehicles in all, before it runs out.

Wonder how it’ll shape up – will it be WA xxxx A, then WA xxxx B, and when the suffix eventually reaches Y, the next sequence rolls on to WB xxxx A?

That’s what I assumed they would do. Once W1 – WYY9999 is exhausted sway the numbers and letters around and start again, i.e. 1W – 9999WYY. That way they don’t have to increase the actual number of symbols in a number plate.

It shouldnt be Anthony’s Lim’s way.. really messy..

If alphabet one side.. let it be one side.. 2 side just for KL.. wouldnt it be messy?
One side only alphabet may sound more tidy and easier for other to take note.

Well, that’s not my way, actually. It’s the transport ministry’s way, with the suggestion of adding a suffix letter after the numbers. :) I was merely kicking off discussion on how it could shape up. The permutations and choices, as you’ve read on some posts on this thread, are quite broad.

Why not add one Tel No. suffix, very adults Rakyat should know these Nos. means…

Selangor: 3WA XXXX followed by 3WAA XXXX then WA3 XXXX next WAA3 XXXX
    Johor: 7JA XXXX, 7JAA XXXX, JA7 XXXX, JAA7 XXXX

If i’m not mistaken, each state should have 4 new series, series has 5.2Mil, x4 = 21Mil Reg. Nos.

    ( Tel Nos. suffix : 03 Selangor, 07 Johor, Melaka 04, 09 Pahang )

But then WA312 can be WA 312 or WA3 12 right?

And also, if you add the state code, it’s one character, but if you add one more alphabet, e.g. WAAA, it’s 23 more characters = increased permutation combinations.

    Introduce a completely new series…..GAA…GAB…or…RAA…RAB…

Don’t forget W series did not start with WA, but W.
First wilayah vehicle was W1, first selangor was B1 and so on.

If add alphabet after the number, the aesthetics may be affected, and people may start to opt for Selangor plates rather than Wilayah, which may affect JPJ plate “sales”.

If Wilayah starts using different first alphabet after W, can choose E,F,G,I,O,U,V,X,Y. (Yes I and O also, because if this alphabet is in front, its definitely note the number 1 or 0). But what happens when Penang’s P and Johor’s J reaches PYY and JYY respectively? What after other states or the new Wilayah also reaches #YY? May not have any more alphabets by then (after 30 to 50 years)

    Suggestion:
    1. After WYY 9999 becomes W1 (but all the 2nd generation W plates will be different color, no more white number over black. Maybe 2nd gen is black over yellow, 3rd gen white over red, or any other combination). This way i feel the appeal will still be there, and JPJ can earn big big bucks selling the single W plates. Plate simplicity is always considered expensive.
    2. Use Aussie system. Side border (top or bottom) of plate, write “Wilayah Persekutuan KL”, and for number, can start with any alphabet (can conquer the whole range, even existing state alphabets n still won’t confuse). Can still make the numbers “running”. Can even have customized all letters or mixture like “SUPERBOY”, “TOPMAN”, “2FAST4U”, “BE3LAMA” plates. So, when Johor also gets to JYY, their next gen plates will have “Johor Darul Takzim” at side and any combination of alphabets/numbers inside, and still not get confused with KL plates, and will not run out of combination for a extremely long time. This system will make JPJ filthy rich, and i think, the rakyat quite syiok also.

Actually, did FT plates start with W? The original configuration for W was for Province Wellesley, under the British colonial system; though issued out until 1957, the plate remained valid through (as is P, for Penang, and M issued out for Malacca) when Malaya became Malaysia. I believe Wilayah plates rolled out with WA, to avoid confusion with those vehicles that still bore (some, to this day) a W plate – perhaps someone out there can confirm if this was the case, or did FT plates begin with a W upon the formation of Wilayah Persekutuan?

I like your suggestion that the name of the state is placed on the plate itself rather just letter to differentiate state. Putrajaya is doing is although on limited basis.

I bet people are more patriotic towards plate that show their respective state. especially Kelantanese. Hehehe.

Seen a W 2 plate in pusat bandar damansara area. My personal suggestion would be to affix a letter after the numbers (W 1 A). I believe this systems is easier to implement as there is an existing system in Langkawi thus the government doesn’t need to reprogram their computer systems. Another way is to recycle the number plates that is not registered anymore as I’m quite sure there would be several hundred thousand registries that are not registered anymore. This surely reminds me of the Y2k problem back in the 2000s

The new plate after WYY9999 will be W1A referring to those Ministry of transport idea. By then, this plate sequence actually the same as those blue trade plate? See it? Maybe they will affixes those last alphabet according to the district, let say W1B for bandaraya, W1P for Pandan area, W1S for selayang. :-) After W9999A, it will be WA1A.

    WXX 1234 A will be quite a mess ..
Our plate number concept is incremental ..
Just continue incrementing from WAAA 1 to WYYY 9999 .. that should be long enough.. ..

Btw, why should we even talk about this ? is this just an excuse to give out a RM 1billion contract to a contractor to provide a system that can generate a new number scheme ?

    Current “normal number” scheme :

Increment Number Group until found number not pre purchased / special number
if number part > 9999 Increment Alphabet Group by avoiding IOZ , number reset to next number available
if Alphabet Group exhausted the number of character allocated (already at RY for example)
reset alphabet group to A or AA and add new character at end of group to become AA or AAA respectively (RY become RAA, WYY become WAAA )

Concatenate Alphabet Group and Number Group

    —-
changing to WAA 1234 A will need new scheme and will justify new system purchase .. or large VO / CR on existing one ..

What the Government need to tell first is that, without doing anything, what would the system output for W series when we register new car after WYY 9999 ?

they can also make use of Vxx any other alphabet .. no system change ..

It’s easy really. Once the WYY plate is finished, register the new cars under B plates, because most of W plate cars are registered by Selangorians! I know someone who went to the trouble just to get a W plate while living in Klang!

    • Then, what about other part of Selangor?

I think the W plates should be limited for those living and birth in KL only.
No more Selangorian can registered under W plates.

another best idea is using new alphabet that not used before such as F. Eg. FAA xxxx.
F also stand for federal territories.

  • one thing the reg number should include
year of reg 1st half and 2nd half like in the united kingdom.

so number or letters can be recycled, but not the years

with this we know when the car register, how old is the car
    the state it registered.

  • JPJ should use some brain in designing new series so that it will add value to the current system and improve efficiency in the government department. Certainly a different series of number plates willl bring short term inconveniences to the general public who need to get use to this, but it is all worth it if the change brings enormous improvement to us and the next generations. This requires not just brain and intelligence but a new generations of Malaysians , who think out of the box, to provide solutions that we the nation will be so proud of.

  • perhaps combination like, W-3049-FSD, W-123-LPA, W-8-SSS, etc. it can provide up to millions set of different plates before its running out.

    W=W/P
    3049=4digits
    FSD=random alphabets

Together with emboss type of plate to prevent fault use or easy duplication. this has been widely used in other countries, incl both north and south of our neighbour country.

  • if its FT for the new plates, i guess only one car model has the rights to the number plates and it has gotta be the FT-86.

It is OK to have like WA 1234 A, just like SBA 1234 A (Singapore), SAA 1234 A (Sabah), KV 1234 A (Langkawi) but I think, better freeze W plate after WYY at first place to allow B plate to be registered. On 17/3/2011 12.00 p.m., current B plate is BLE 805. Johor currently is JMU 1054. The reason J plate so fast due to many Singaporean live in JB and bought car in JB for commuting to Singapore and travelling to their hometown in Malaysia due to recent hike price of COE, many Singaporean unaffordable to buy a car with S plates, they have to buy J plate cars if they need use a car.

On the road, B plates gaining popularity among luxury cars recently. Other advantage B plate is don’t look old faster compare to W.

The best B plate is BMW XXXX but B plate quite slow. Maybe year 2013, BMW issued. All BMW owners want to buy the plate including me. I hope JPJ can reserve BMW plates to BMW cars and motorcycles only, like JMF plate for Johor Military Force. Only BMW cars or motorcycles will allowed to buy BMW plates.

The pitiest plate is R. Currently is RJ 5458 because many Perlisian opt for K plates. Kedah currently KCX 1504.

Talking politics name number plates such as PKR, PAS, DAP, PR, MCA. The tender must be high. Look at MCA plates, reaces RM 300,100 for MCA 1 and bought by a company in JB. MCA 4 is bought by a Malay businesswoman. MCA 7474 is bought by a Malay man.

Another best B number plate instead BMW number plate is BLM.

Many Proton Saga BLM owners will buy BLM 1- BLM 9999.

Currently is BLF 921 . Maybe late 2011 BLM is issued.

Is it a trade plate (blue blackground)? Because recently trade plate are attached instead hanging to avoid paint being scratched from the number plate.

The letter E cannot be used for Wilayah new plate because it’s used in Sabah before: SA(KKinabalu), SS(Sandakan),ST(Tawau) SD(Lahad Datu, SK(Kudat), SB (Beaufort),SU (Keningau),SL(Labuan) series. Formerly Sabah used
    EJ,EJA,EJA – K. Kinabalu (J stands for Jesselton
    ES, ESA for Sandakan
    ET,ETA for Tawau
    ED for Lahad Datu
    EK for Kudat
    EB for Beaufort
    EU for Keningau
EL for Labuan (now FTLabuan use LA,LB, LC….)
For Wilayah plate after WYY9999 I think W1A or WA1A

I hope one day Putrajaya will have it’s own plate number. I think ‘Y’ is suitable since it’s not been used yet. If so i would like to have Y 2020, if it starts in that year.
