Kia plans to add roadster to lineup, says Peter Schreyer

There are plans to add a roadster to the Kia model lineup, perhaps along the lines of the Kee two-door coupe concept from three years ago, but that will have to wait until two other vehicles get their needed makeover first.

According to a report, Kia’s styling head Peter Schreyer wants to have “some sort of roadster or convertible” in the range, but first “we have to do our homework and replace our complete product range.”

Both the Rondo and Sedona MPV are targeted for changes to bring them in line with the tiger nose family face seen in the rest of the current range.

As such, Schreyer – who was the designer of the original Audi TT – says that plans to add the roadster will have to wait at least another year, the report says.

And though Schreyer is pragmatic about the fact that “a car like that needs to make money, and this isn’t so easy,” he’s got his heart set on it and won’t give up until Kia has a roadster in the lineup.

    KIA (Lotus) Elan successor? Interesting.

Since Hyundai has already for the rear drive Genesis platform, its not unconceivable that KIA can get something up and running in short time. That Genesis coupe is sure a looker.

As for the Sedona, this is way over due to a platform refresh, let alone a facelift.

Kia getting ambitious. Needs to improve build quality FIRST.

If driving dynamics is good then quality can become secondary, like some Italian rides. They just call it ‘soul’. :-)

  • The last Kia Roaster i saw was lying inside Naza showroom collecting dust for years.

Hope Schyerer don’t get over Enthusiasm & repeat the same mistake. :-(

    • Huh? Roaster? for chicken or duck.. emm.. maybe the roaster that u saw inside the Naza showroom is for employees to cook something..

      • Good spelling checker “Roadster” but lake of historic knowledge.

After the final production run of the Elan in 1995, Kia Motors bought all the relevant license of Elan from Lotus to manufacture their own version. Outwardly, the Kia version looks almost identical to the original. Through 1996 to 1999, Kia Motors built the car as the Kia Elan for the Korean market, using a 151 hp (113 kW) 1.8 L TSD engine instead of the Isuzu-made 1.6.

There is a Red one in Jalan Pahang Kia Showroom few year back.

        Now u owe me 1 “Roaster” :-)

  • Better stop bying Rondo & Ria now.

As new design come out mean current design value will drop rock bottom, just like Spectra after Forte launched.

im curious, what does KIA mean in Korean??? or did it mean something else those K.I.A.?? does it mean TIGER?? are there any tigers in Korea actually??

anyway, KIA was making good entrance to the world today, but i do believe they also need to involve more into motorsports to enhanced their name..
