VIDEO: New 2016 Renault F1 livery surfs to shore

The Renault Sport Formula One Team’s new yellow livery for this season’s FIA Formula 1 World Championship has been unveiled. The clip is made with the help of a beach, a few women, a surfboard and Renault team drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer.

“We’re in F1 to ultimately get lots of points on track, but also to get lots of attention off track, so we came up with this idea. To our knowledge it’s the first time an F1 car has ever surfed,” Renault Sport managing director Cyril Abiteboul said of the video.

The choice to go with a single colour is to keep with the brand’s corporate colour and also the fact that it traces back to Renault’s F1 history. “The first-ever Renault F1 car, the RS01, hit the track in yellow and black in 1977 and this latest livery is a nod to this formidable car,” he said.

The RS16 with its new yellow paint scheme also possesses a number of interesting elements to it. For one, that matte finish paint (similar to Red Bull’s) is believed to offer weight savings of almost half a kilogramme as compared to gloss paint.

Apart from that, a few finishing touches, including metallic colours that reflects light off the car during night races, a “diamond” pattern at the rear – in-line with the brand’s identity – and gold flashes (to signify the team’s goal to reach the top) have been all been added to the RS16.
