Honda has unveiled a new racing livery for its Civic Red Bull Global Rallycross racecar (GRC). The brand will be campaigning the new turbocharged 2016 Civic Coupe in the upcoming series, in partnership with Red Bull and race team Olsbergs MSE.
It’s developed from a production version of the 2016 Civic Coupe’s chassis by Olsbergs MSE with technical help from Honda Performance Development (HPD). The racer is built to endure the entirety of the racing series, which usually calls for repeated aggressive acceleration and varied terrain.
The Civic Coupe GRC will have over 600 hp and will go from 0-96 km/h in 1.9 seconds. Meanwhile, the purpose-built racecar is also designed to handle 21-metre table-top jumps that can be found on each racetrack. Driving the 2016 Honda Civic Red Bull GRC car for Team Honda will be experienced drivers and former teammates, Sebastian Eriksson and Joni Wiman.
“Global Rallycross is seriously extreme racing, and it’s a terrific platform to showcase the new Civic Coupe to an enthusiastic, performance-minded young audience,” said Nick Lee, national advertising manager at American Honda Motor Co.
“We won’t encourage our customers to take 70-foot (21-metre) jumps out on the street, but we will use this platform to tell people about all the incredible technology and performance capabilities of our new Civic Coupe,” Lee explains. The Honda Civic Red Bull GRC will race on May 21 and May 22 in Phoenix.
Red Bull Global Rallycross is a motorsport series that pits small production-based cars against each other. It features dirt, asphalt, table-top jumps and this season will start at the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Arizona, US.
