SPIED: G30 BMW 5 Series M Sport shows its interior

2017 G30 BMW 5 Series M Sport 4

Here’s our clearest view yet of the upcoming 2017 G30 BMW 5 Series, pictured here in its more aggressive M Sport guise. Also revealed here is the next-generation 5 Series M Sport’s interior, with most of its major controls out in the open. No, there are no surprises – what you’d expect is what you’ll see here.

Up front, the M Sport bumper shows its shape here, featuring thick vertical ‘U’ elements and honeycomb inserts instead of the more timid horizontal lines on the standard model. Also visible is the Active air stream kidney grille (a la the G12 7 Series), along with LED headlights and the oval-shaped radar cruise control unit placed low down.

Elsewhere, shapelier ‘upswept’ wing mirrors, high performance M Sport brakes with blue calipers (inside 19-inch M Sport wheels) and all-LED tail lamps can be seen. The unique trapezoidal exhaust tips are housed within a sizable lower diffuser element, the outline of which can easily be traced here.

The interior is also partially open, showing a downsized 7 Series dashboard. The large screen, air-con vents, gear lever and iDrive controller appear very similar to what we’ve seen in BMW’s latest flagship model (but with plastic buttons rather than alloy), as is the new M Sport steering wheel with marginally thicker spokes.

Like the outgoing F10 5 Series, the G30 appears to have LCD Black Panel instruments with physical meter rings. Note however, that this may not be representative of all G30 models, as BMW usually has two (or more) instrument cluster variations, depending on spec levels. We will know more when the car is unveiled in due time.

So, based on what we’ve seen, would you wait for this 2017 G30 BMW 5 Series, or go for the W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class that is due here in Malaysia soon?

    A bit of same-old design but what do I know since I can’t afford…

No surprises here it looks like a scaled down 7er. The change will be seen in the next gen X3 and the models that come after that which includes the G20.

I onced owned an F30 and first sight and feel, the interior was great. But after just a few days and seeing the new C interior, i knew BMW fails at interior design. The only good interior which looks the part is the current 5er and the prev gen 7er. The somewhat bulkiness of the interior looks posh and the use of leather throughout was a sight. But the F30, the new 7er and this new 5er looks so bland. Yes, egronomically its great but it doesnt look the part. Especially for what you pay.

Untill today I have never understood car reviewers say that the F30 interior looks posh. Material wise, its alright but the looks does not justify the cars appeal and how it is dubbed ‘luxury sports sedan’ title.

Agreed. The F30 interior is not up to par to bmw standards. I would rather buy a used f10 then getting a new f30. The interior of yhe f10(design and material used) is much better. In fact the e90 interior is better then the f30! However the round msport steering is awesome!

Bmw have never pretended that the 3er is a posh model. It has always been a premium sports sedan. Its mercedes that cant seem to make up its mind whether it wants to be a 3 series or a mini s class.

    • You don’t buy the 3 series for posh-ness, you buy it for the superior driving dynamics. If you want posh-ness go for Merc, but don’t expect similar driving dynamics to the 3er.

  • I think BMW should overhaul their design for the interiors of their cars. They’re getting bland and so yester-year. MBenz raised the bar with the S-class and other models that come next; Lexus gave it a shoot with their aggressive styling and abundant use of leather, metal and wood; and created the LC500 that stunned us all; while Audi is poised to apply the interior deisgn of the TT to all other models, and it’s a good thing. But what has BMW done so far? I personally find the 7series ugly, especially those amoeba-shape headlights. Ewwww!!

Chris Bangle needs to return!! Bangle-butt or not but he brought us the E60, E65 and E89.

The biggest issue I have with Mercedes (Jaguar & Range Rover included) is that their dash looks like it was slapped on at the very last minute without much thoughts.

It’s just a big rectangular screen, multiply by two (for the centre console). You get a very well thought of and masterfully crafted interior with good trim details, and then you get two big ugly LCDs. It’s worse with the Range Rover as the resolution used there is horrendous! Even mobile phones has better DPI! (Dots per inch)

Audi did this with more taste with the ‘shaped’ dash and LCD.

Personally, I like BMW’s direction with the physical meter ring, that’s a very nice touch.

But still, doesn’t give BMW an excuse for their usually more dated looking/feeling interior.

I’m sure it will be nice to drive. But can’t BMW be a bit more imaginative on the exterior design. The interior (which should follow the 7 Series) should be fine. Sure it won’t beat a Lexus or Audi for sheer design, quality materials, and build quality, but it’s not ugly nor cheap either. Hope the build quality has improved.
