F10 BMW 5 Series sales exceed two million mark

Over two million units of the F10 BMW 5 Series have been sold globally since its market launch in 2010. According to the company, this milestone makes the F10 5 Series the most successful generation to date.

Compared to the previous fifth-generation 5 Series, sales of the current model has risen by more than 42%. The company noted that in 2015, a total of 347,000 units – comprised of the BMW 5 Series Sedan, Touring and Gran Turismo – have been sold.

The brand disclosed that since its debut in 1972, a cumulative total of over 7.5 million units of the 5 Series have been sold. “Therefore, this series is one of the decisive factors in BMW’s success story,” BMW stated.

With that, the 2017 G30 BMW 5 Series looks like it will have to live up to quite a reputation. The next-generation model is expected to use a modified version of the CLAR platform that underpins the current BMW 7 Series. Said platform utilises a mix of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), aluminium and magnesium.

Meanwhile, the next-generation 5 Series is also expected to carry lightweight body panels just like the new 7er too. These will likely be applied to the roof, bonnet, boot lid and and door skins and it is said that it will weigh up to 100 kg less than the F10.

Power-wise, the choice of BMW’s four-, six- and eight-cylinder TwinPower turbo petrol and diesel engines can be expected, along with a plug-in hybrid variant. On top of that, a variant with BMW’s new three-cylinder TwinPower engine is said to be in the plans as well.

The new G30 looks like a smaller 7er especially from the front. Here’s hoping the tail lights will be different
