PLUS has issued a travel time advisory (TTA) in conjunction with the Hari Raya ‘balik kampung’ exodus from the city. The operator of the North-South Expressway (NSE) says it’s aimed at preventing vehicles heading towards various destinations from converging at the same location on the highway and contribute to traffic congestion.
“The TTA plays an important role in distributing traffic on the mainline as it prevents vehicles from converging at the same location at the same time. The sudden spike on the number of traffic at a particular location usually contribute to traffic congestion during festive season and peak periods,” said PLUS MD Datuk Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid.
Based on the TTA, Perlis and Kedah-bound traffic from the Klang Valley are advised to enter the NSE between 6am and 10am, while those heading to Penang, North and Central Perak are encouraged to enter between 10am and 6pm.
“The advisory, if adhered to, prevents vehicles heading towards Penang, North and Central Perak uniting with Perlis and Kedah bound traffic. Instead, these vehicles will be scattered and distributed at various locations along the mainline. This will contribute to smoother traffic flow heading north. The same concept also applies to traffic heading down south,” Noorizah explained.
PLUS anticipates that approximately 1.6 million vehicles will ply the NSE on every peak day (July 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10), a 20% increase from regular days. “As such, we advise the public to plan their journey based on the TTA. Based on our studies and observation, traffic was generally smooth when more drivers followed the TTA during previous festive seasons,” Noorizah added.
As a strategy to distribute traffic more evenly, PLUS is offering a 30% toll rebate for PLUS and Elite Highway users travelling more than 100 km on off-peak days (July 4, 8 and 11) and paying toll electronically.
