If you missed out on securing a Ford GT of your own, you’re in luck, because the Blue Oval has just announced that production of the new-age supercar will be extended for a further two years. This four-year production commitment means Ford could move beyond the initial 500-car run, although it did not disclose how many more cars it plans to build over the extra two years of production.
“While we can’t build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors. We want to keep Ford GT exclusive, but at the same time we know how vital this customer is to our brand,” said Dave Pericak, global director of Ford Performance.
Owning a Ford GT is no easy feat, with prospective buyers required to submit an online application, commit to a legal requirement and basically justify to Ford why you deserve one. Daunting as it may be, that did not stop over 6,000 applications being sent in, although just 500 lucky ones managed to receive the coveted letter that starts with, congratulations! You’ve been selected for the opportunity to purchase a new Ford GT!”
According to Ford, year three of GT production will support applicants who were placed on the waiting list, while previously deferred applicants and those who missed the initial application window will be served by the fourth year of production. The application process for the latter will reopen in early 2018, and those who have already applied need only update their request.
It’s easy to see why the Ford GT is so desirable. The reborn supercar looks absolutely stunning, and features body panels made out of carbon-fibre, mated to aluminium front and rear subframes. Other attractive bits include the mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.5 litre EcoBoost V6 that produces over 600 hp, with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
