A new inspection system is set to reduce motorcycle lane congestion at Malaysia-Singapore entry points, Bernama reports. The Secured Automated Clearance System for Malaysian Citizen Motorcyclists (M-BIKE) will be fully operational by next month, and will bring the bike inspection time down significantly, according to deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

With the M-BIKE system, the inspection time is reduced to eight seconds compared to the earlier method which took between 12 to 15 seconds for each motorcycle, he said. “Through the system, (so far) we have overcome congestion during peak hours, while motorcyclists and pillon riders made significant savings in time compared to the conventional system,” he told reporters.

The initial phase of the M-BIKE system will have 50 exit and entry lanes at the CIQ complex in Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, while there will be 25 exit and entry lanes at Bangunan Sultan Abu Bakar at Linkedua (Second Link). On average, about 60,000 motorcyclists cross the Malaysia-Singapore border daily, the report by the national news agency stated.

Ahmad Zahid added that special lanes for large capacity motorcycles were being built, and are expected to be ready in two months. “Currently, there is still a constraint where big motorcycles are concerned. About 12% of large motorcycles cannot pass through (the M-BIKE lanes),” he said.
