Genesis G80 to get unique Australian suspension tune – E39 BMW 5 Series is the dynamic benchmark

The Genesis premium brand by Hyundai will be launched in Australia this September, and the Hyundai Genesis large sedan will be updated and rebranded as the Genesis G80. According to CarAdvice, the Australian-spec G80 will get a local suspension tune for better dynamics.

The publication said that Hyundai’s Sydney-based team had chosen the E39 BMW 5 Series as the G80’s dynamic benchmark. While the E39 is famous for its good ride and handling balance, it’s still eye-catching to read of a 20-year old car being a benchmark. Popular with limo drivers Down Under, the Genesis is described as a cushy, spacious and plush model that won’t set any handling benchmarks.

It’s not certain yet if Australia will get the Genesis G80 Sport with a 3.3 litre twin-turbo V6 with 365 hp and 510 Nm, which was revealed late last year with more aggressive looks and a sportier set-up.

The Genesis G80 will debut there alongside the all-new Genesis G70, which takes Hyundai’s luxury brand into the compact premium exec segment dominated by the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4. Asian rivals include the Lexus IS and Infiniti Q50. To start with, Genesis won’t have stand-alone dealerships in Oz, but dedicated sections within Hyundai outlets.

It is right, BMW is 20 years ahead of the rest.

    Love the design language.

Noticed something though, there’s a 1/4 tank of fuel left. But range is just 96 Miles?

Someone did some spirited driving before the shoot? :)

kind of misleading article there…the actual article read like this….”And Hyundai’s local team based in Sydney has benchmarked the car against what’s generally regarded as one of the best-handling large sedans ever made: the E39 BMW 5 Series.”
so it is not a bad thing since the genesis trying to go back to basic tuning of large sedan even the new bmw’ nowadays are lacking when all the fat is being added to the car.

Indeed. Had a go with E60 before, the car just feels too fat and heavy.

E39 is still the best looking 5-series too. Everything is just right with it.

Also the G70 does not belong in the “compact premium exec segment dominated by the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4”. I’ve seen this car and size wise its more like the 5-series and E-class segment.

I think Kia is doing better design wise, compared to Hyundai. Never liked the E39 much when it first came out, as the E34 looked better. But now, with the right rims, it doesn’t look too bad.

I have both e39 and e34, and drove e28 for 4 years. I would say both 3 cars have it’s forte. E39 more suitable for balanced long distance drive. E34 when you’ve to release out some of spirited driving habit. But when you carve twisty road like Tapah-Cameron, e28 would be the winner!
