While the Audi R8 has been synonymous with the brand’s quattro permanent all-wheel drive system for all of its life, a rear-wheel drive version is set to make its debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.
Teased on Audi Sport’s official Instagram page, we see a white R8 with red accents performing donuts for the camera. A rear-wheel drive R8 follows in the footsteps of its close cousin, the Lamborghini Huracan RWD (previously known as the LP 580-2).
Although we can’t hear the engine note of the new R8 variant, it will likely feature the same 5.2 litre V10 found in the current R8 line-up. The V10 comes in two outputs – 540 hp and 540 Nm on the no-plus variants and 610 hp and 560 Nm on the plus version – but which will be called upon is yet unknown.
Another possibility is a 2.9 litre biturbo TFSI V6 engine found in the latest Porsche Panamera and Audi RS5, serving as a replacement for the discontinued 4.2 litre V8 in the first-generation R8. The V6 version, if unveiled, will become the entry-level variant of the R8. However, whether it will come with or without the quattro system, we’ll have to wait and see.
