Borgward and Go Bremen Motors have signed an agreement which will see the latter handling the manufacturing and distribution of Borgward models for the Malaysian market as well as selected countries in the ASEAN region. The agreement was inked on April 29 at a ceremony held during the Malaysia Autoshow 2018.
Talks and negotiations between the two parties were established sometime in January 2017, with a series of discussions – held locally and abroad – eventually culminating with an MOU being signed in September 2017, paving the way for the establishment of Go Bremen in the same year.
The Borgward BX7 and BX5 SUVs, which were previewed at the show, will spearhead the Chinese-owned German brand‘s entry into the market. According to the company, the official launch is expected to be sometime in the the third quarter of 2018. Details, especially with regards to commercial aspects, will be shared when the cars make their official market debut.
Borgward, which was formed in 1919 before going bankrupt in 1961, was resurrected in 2015 – the brand is owned by Chinese automaker Beiqi Foton Motor, a subsidiary of BAIC Group. The BX7, which made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015, marked the brand’s return on to the scene.
The 4.7 metre-long SUV, available in five, six or seven-seat versions, is powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-pot offering 224 PS at 5,500 rpm and 300 Nm from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. The mill is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, with a permanent all-wheel drive system in tow.
The BX5, meanwhile, is a slightly more compact five-seater, and is powered by a 1.8 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine offering 190 PS and 280 Nm, with a six-speed auto transmission and all-wheel drive again on call. There’s also a downsized 1.4 litre turbo four-pot with 150 PS and 250 Nm available in China.
Local specifications have not been confirmed, nor is that of pricing. At the show, on-site reps mentioned that the BX5 will be “under RM100k,” while the BX7 will go for “under RM200k.” More when the time comes.

Good news for us the consumers. Not so good news for japunis car salesman.
Make sure all BX5 also has 6 airbags plus stability control as standard, just like the BX7. Otherwise it won’t sell, guaranteed.
Interior needs the more premium version, especially for BX7.
Good aftersales service and spare parts availability.
Email of the chief customer service manager(preferably someone from China) needs to be provided, for complaints to be made. Some degree of pressure is needed for the officers to work properly.
Do it right from the very beginning.
You are having a German brand, don’t spoil it.
Who knows in 30 years time, it may become another Lexus.
Sorry, China do not need an advice from a white man.
Go Bremen, but Werder was dangerously in relegation battle.
BX5 & 7 seems like a veli similar car but diff design styling. Not sure is a gud thing or not, some might prefer one design but specs of the other.
Borgward is definitely going to make Proton Boyue to be priced lower. Hurray for the competition.
Good news for consumers. Competition will keep car sellers honest.
If BX5 CKD version offers exactly the same spec which shown in the brochures and priced under RM100K for the top spec, I will definitely buy one, maybe two for me and my wife.
