New national car to roll out in 2020 – model name to be revealed by end of 2018, prototype out early next year

The new national car project (NNCP) will make its debut in 2020, and it will be very much a Malaysian-based development, according to entrepreneur development minister Mohd Redzuan Yusof.

This was revealed at a press briefing on the project earlier today at the Malaysian industry-government group for high technology (MIGHT) headquarters in Cyberjaya. The organisation, which is under the purview of the prime minister’s department, has been appointed to communicate the various facets of the project. It will also coordinate the NNCP with various government ministries, agencies and the industry.

According to Mohd Redzuan, the name of the vehicle will be announced by the end of this year, while the prototype for the NNCP model is expected to be ready by early next year. The vehicle, which is expected to feature semi-autonomous driving capability, will see the participation of names that are fresh to the automotive scene.

“We are now shortlisting two to three partners to participate in this project, including SilTerra and CTRM, and expect things to be concluded by year-end,” he said.

SilTerra is a Malaysian semiconductor manufacturer based in Kulim, while Composites Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM) manufactures composites components primarily for aeronautical structures, although it is now moving into other fields such as manufacturing composite components for light rail transit and automotive applications.

Mohd Redzuan said that the NNCP will revitalise the national automotive industry and help the parts and components industry that drives small and medium enterprises (SMEs) grow.

New national car to roll out in 2020 – model name to be revealed by end of 2018, prototype out early next year

He added that the effort to introduce a high-tech automotive manufacturing platform with the new national car will provide local companies the opportunity to explore new businesses and technologies.

The project is slated to promote growth in a number of areas, developing more than 500 new automotive suppliers and vendors as well as more than 100 new entrepreneurs as a result of its formation. It is also expected to result in the creation of a large number of jobs for Malaysians.

The ambition, he said, was to deliver a car that will not only cater to the local market but regionally and beyond. He added that the project would not involve taxpayer money but will be fully funded by the private sector, with the help of several government ministries.

In 1985, a brand new Mercedes Benz 200 was RM57k. Many Malaysians could afford to buy a Mercedes.

Infact, it was so cheap that many teksi drivers bought Mercedes as their teksis. In the 80s, there were thousands of brand new Mercedes 240D and 300D Mercedes as teksis in Malaysia.

Today in 2018, the Mercedes is RM400k. Who really can afford?

Do you know why our Mercedes has gone up from RM57k to RM400k from 1985 to 2018?

The answer is Protectionism Towards Proton.

Now in 2018, vietnam oso come out own national car VinFast, learn from US & German technology. To bring this vision to reality, VinFast has pulled in talent from around the world, mostly General Motors veterans. These include DeLuca as well as design director David Lyons, head of engineering Kevin Fisher, director of planning and product management Roy Flecknell, and vice president of engineering Shawn Calvert. It’s probably one of the reasons why VinFast has taken over GM’s Vietnamese business, including the latter’s Hanoi plant and the distributorship of Chevrolet vehicles in the country. As a result of this deal, VinFast’s city car, which will follow soon after the first two cars in the fourth quarter of next year, will be based on the Chevrolet Spark. There is also an electric car in the plans, but that will be developed in house in partnership with German engineering firm EDAG.

Already Proton failed big time and we have to tanggung malu and sell Proton to China for a cheap RM170 million

      Isn’t that shame enough?

Government spent over RM20 billion to keep Proton alive and we sold the company for a mere RM170 million, losing Lotus and losing Proton’s land worth RM5 billion in Shah Alam.

I think Malaysians have suffered enough of losses.

30 years we protected the 12,000 workers in Proton. Just like how we protect the 1.6 million workers in Putrajaya.

Malaysia needs to learn to down size its workforce and make the few people work harder.

Same problem in Proton. 12,000 workers produce 50,000 cars per annum

Mitsubishi in Thailand has 6000 workers producing 320,000 cars per annum

Half the workforce produce 7X more cars.

This is a daydream. Neglected to inform how much investment will be spent… and who will be footing the bill.

Why is it called a National Car if it’s fully private funded and managed? Is Getha mattress a National Mattress Project? 99Speedmart?

      “Don’t swindle us again”

Tell that to the mahacais. The instance another “crying atuk” video with sad song comes out, they will be racing to the polling stations to pangkah atok again because these are the lower part of the IQ bell curve that atok relied on to win the elections, and low IQ will remain low IQ until 2023.

In order to develop the automobile industry, the Korean government announced an “Automobile Industry Promotion Policy” in 1962, and The Automobile Industry Protection Act to protect the infant industry. Foreign automakers were barred from operating in Korea, except in joint ventures with local business entities. The government’s efforts led to companies that were established in other businesses entering the industry, and the formation of new startups. Three companies were established in 1962: Kyeongseong Precision Industry, which changed its name to “Kia Industry”, and started assembling cars in cooperation with Mazda in 1962; Dongbang Automobiles, which was merged with Ha Dong-hwan Workshop and became Ha Dong-hwan Automobile Industry Co. (the predecessor of SsangYong Motor Company) in 1963; and Saenara Automobile, established with the technical cooperation of Nissan Motor Co.; it was the first automaker in Korea that was equipped with modern assembly facilities, and acquired by Shinjin Industries in 1965.

To those haters/self-made pro finance commentator,

To made it sound like your own voice, Jack Ma started making website for company in china when there only rich can afford to access internet in china.
Jack Ma started e-commerce platform when china people dont even have trust in face-to-face deal in retail environment and not to mention they burning millions to get their website going.
Similar stories go to a lot others entrepreneur. the reason for being average is because you thinking average.

That is like saying Malaysia is a nation of people who just walk and ride bicycles and now people are condemning the invention of the automobile!

We already have past examples.. two mediocre national cars. We already have precedence of massive government wastage and bailouts by the very same man who’s now spearheading this dumb idea. We already have protectionism measures that raised imported can prices and their prices have hardly reduced since.

And you’re saying the detractors are negative or pessimistic?

Protiga should be be fully electric eVs (cars, trucks etc) for export imagine the downstream and upstream opening up and/or taping into the already existing solar and lithium battery OEMs in Malaysia. I want to own the first Malaysian made electric car. https://paultan.org/2018/07/27/new-national-electric-vehicle-project-proposal-coming/
