SPIED: Audi Q3 Sportback – could this be the new Q4?

It appears that Audi is preparing the first ever Q3 Sportback in an attempt to proliferate its Sportback moniker. At this point, it’s unclear if there will ever be a standalone Q4 (the name is currently in use for the Q4 e-tron) model, but our sources say this prototype mule is indeed the Q3 Sportback, so there’s that.

While the name is not confirmed, what’s certain is that the test mule here features a steeply tapered roofline. Positioned to take on the BMW X2 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, the Q3 Sportback will share the same mechanical underpinnings as the second-generation Q3.

It will ride on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, which brings with it a raft of engine offerings, some level of electrification, as well as advanced safety technologies. From the outset, the Q3 Sportback will get the same powertrain offering as the regular Q3, those being the 1.5 litre, 2.0 litre and top-of-the-line 2.5 litre five-cylinder petrol that’s found in the RS3 and TT RS.

Of course, a plug-in hybrid model is also likely in the pipeline. As per China’s green vehicle regulations, the Q3 Sportback PHEV should get an all-electric range of at least 50 km.

In terms of features, the sportier SUV should get a liftback-style tailgate like the Q8, a full-HD instrument panel, a 10.1-inch MMI touch display with gesture control, Qi wireless charging tray for compatible smartphones, as well as the latest connectivity features.

Safety-wise, it should mirror the Q3’s kit, which includes adaptive cruise assist with speed assist, traffic jam assist, active lane assist and a four-camera system that make up the 360-degree around-view monitor. Park assist with self-steer function should also be available. The Q3 Sportback will be built alongside the Q3 at the automaker’s facility in Gyor, Hungary.
