BMW X2 M35i shown in Malaysia; July launch, RM400k

BMW Malaysia has just unveiled the BMW X2 M35i at its buka puasa event with the media. Unveiled globally in September 2018, the X2 M35i is the flagship variant of the F39 BMW X2 range, and it’s set to arrive in local showrooms in July 2019. The estimated OTR without insurance price is RM400,000.

The M Performance model is powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 306 hp and 450 Nm of torque from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm. It’s the first M Performance model to have a four-pot engine, and the most powerful four-pot ever to roll out from Munich. 0-100 km/h is done in just 4.9 seconds and top speed is limited to 250 km/h.

The motor, which has a a redesigned cooling system to match the performance, is paired to xDrive AWD and an eight-speed automatic transmission with launch control. The torque converter auto boasts specific M Performance tuning.

While slightly less potent that the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45, that’s a sizeable performance jump from the X2 that was launched here in March 2018. The sDrive20i M Sport’s B48 2.0 litre turbo-four makes 192 hp and 280 Nm, with a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.7 seconds. The CBU import was priced at RM320,800.

Engine aside, the X2 M35i comes with M Sport adaptive suspension with two selectable modes. There’s also the M Sport mechanical differential for the front axle to minimise traction loss on the front wheels. Other enhancements include revised steering tuning and upgraded brakes: 18-inch front discs and 17-inch rear ones. Blue calipers with the M logo, too.

Our X2 M35i’s rides on 20-inch Style 721M items in Cerium Grey bicolour, wrapped with 225/40 Pirelli P-Zero runflat tyres. The M35i’s exterior design is based on the standard car’s M Sport package, with just a bit of extra spice.

The front air inlets facilitate better cooling, the kidney grille and wing mirror caps are finished in Cerium Grey (satin), and there’s a are dual exhaust tips measuring 100 mm in diameter. Those are linked to the the M Performance exhaust system with valve control. Inside, it’s the M Sport package with M sports seats as an option (and seatbelts with M stripes) as options. The M35i badge is on the front door sill finishers.

As for connectivity, the X2 M35i comes with BMW ConnectedDrive services including Intelligent Emergency Call, Teleservices, Concierge Services and Remote Services. It’s paired with the carmaker’s Navigation Plus system with an 8.8-inch touch sensitive display and head-up display. Sound comes from a Harman Kardon 360W, 12-speaker system. At RM400k, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) still eludes the X2, unfortunately.

As usual, BMW Group Malaysia’s five-year unlimited mileage warranty is included along with the free scheduled service programme and BMW’s tyre warranty programme.

Looks sweet. Is the Xdrive system similar to that in the new M135i Xdrive? Which can send up to 50% torque to either axles.

Too obscenely expensive bro. So far I’ve only seen one (yellow). Whoever fancies the X2 is better off getting perhaps the GLC or X3 and still have money to spare.

I’m more keen to see the M135i retail for around 300k to compete with the Golf R but doubt it will be that cheap.
