Proton sold 10,611 units in May, highest in 46 months

Proton is claiming sales of 10,611 units in May, which would put it second in the sales league for the second month running, between perennial leader Perodua and top non-national brand Honda. The May total is also the highest monthly sales figure since July 2015, the company says.

May’s 10,611 units was an increase of 51.3% over April, and it helped push overall sales growth for the first five months of the year to over 70%, compared to the same period in 2018. Proton estimates its market share for the month to be 17.2%, the highest point since January 2016.

Leading the line is the Proton X70. According to Proton, it delivered 2,439 units of the SUV in May, and total X70 sales for the first five months of the year is 13,572 units. Include units delivered in late 2018 and you’ll have nearly 15,000 units on Malaysian roads. Proton claims that the X70 is the best selling SUV in the country so far this year.

Elsewhere, the 2019 Proton Iriz and Persona facelifts had their first full month of sales. The sedan did 2,972 units while the hatchback managed 940 units, which is the highest monthly figure for over two years. With nearly 4,000 units, the refreshed duo contributed 36% of total May sales. Proton says that it has over 10,000 bookings to be fulfilled over the coming months.

Rather surprisingly, Saga sales breached the 3,000 unit mark for the second month in a row. With 3,610 units sold in May, year-to-date sales for the model have grown 41% year-on-year. The entry-level sedan is in line for “a major update in the second half of the year,” says Proton. The most recent launch by Proton was last month’s 2019 Exora RC reveal.

“With a 70% increase in sales volume thus far in 2019, Proton is reaping some early rewards for its investment in products, people and sales outlets. The company is hopeful of finishing second overall in total sales for a second consecutive month when overall industry sales figures are revealed by the Malaysian Automotive Association, and we are confident of being able to maintain our strong sales performance for the rest of the year,” said Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong.

“Proton’s strategy for the remainder of the year is to continue to grow our sales by introducing improvements to our current model range and improving our brand experience by opening more 3S/4S outlets as these efforts have obtained positive feedback from our customers. These efforts will help ensure Proton’s brand image is improved as we continue to redefine our brand values in preparation for the introduction of yet more models that are jointly developed with Geely in the future,” Li added.

Comments generally praise Proton's sales growth, attributing success mainly to Geely's influence and technology transfer, while some critics argue Proton has not contributed significantly beyond badge engineering. There is strong support for Proton’s recent performance, especially the X70, with many stating it signals a positive turnaround after past management issues. Several comments highlight the importance of technological advancements, safety features, and design, contrasting Proton's progress with Perodua and other competitors. Critics warn against reliance on Chinese rebadged models and question long-term reliability, but overall, the sentiment leans toward optimism and pride in Proton’s recent achievements, recognizing Geely's role as pivotal. Some debates focus on comparisons with Perodua, Toyota, and Hyundai, emphasizing value and quality improvements, and expressing hope for continued growth and innovation.

            It does matter in fact.
All of the recent successes are greatly contributed by Geely. Admit it, u don’t need to be an insider to see it. And how much stake does Geely have in Proton?
Sooner or later, those who accused others of being hypo will have to accept the fact that on its own, Proton wouldn’t stood a chance. Even with Geely, the Chinese had to throw in their best seller SUV, Boyue and now Bin Yue. Have u ever asked X70 owners, who manufactured their X70s? Pretty sure they bought Boyue, not X70 but hey,
            Boyue = X70 = Proton
Increased sales = Increased in Proton’s revenue.
All I can say is, Proton, DO NOT MESS IT UP AGAIN THIS TIME.

Sorry but this is clearly not an improvement. Proton just cannot learn how to become a game changing company. Look at P2 sales data, each month can sold more than 30k units but our Proton cannot. My suggestion for Proton is that P1 should send rombongan sambil belajar to P2 office and see how P2 workers work

Yeah, Proton is learning from Perodua la. Perodua also got car models from Daihatsu & Toyota maa..

This time Proton takes the same step as what Perodua did. so… what you’re saying is pointless.

Even Proton got its own technology which Geely is now taking advantage of their benefits too…

No, you are wrong, and I beg to differ. It is just not numbers alone and you cannot take such a simplistic view on measuring this. Perodua sell cars that appeal to the lower segment of the market, Proton has different targets. Water will always flow to the lowest level where margins are thinnest.

So, in the case of Proton, it is clearly an improvement.

Partly of what you say might be true (I mean the RV) but I counter that with this, I’m never the kind of person who like to re-sell my car to other than my own family members. And with family members, you cannot expect them to pay according to the RV. So, it’s up to individual to deal with that. Not for you to try and sway their consideration with your non-supportive comments. What is ‘better’ or ‘bad’ in your opinion is only your own opinion.

But I wonder, if you’re certain that x70 or x50 is going to be bad products then convince me to consider what car brand/model to buy next?

      1. The Russian built Geely Atlas is a pre facelift Geely Boyue running a 2.4-litre NA engine.

      2. The Proton X70 is based on the updated Geely Boyue launched in 2018.

      3. The Proton X70 has a 5-star ASEAN NCAP crash rating.

      4. Long term reliability is unproven, but then the car is 5 months old so maybe you should give it some time.

This is why you should pay attention in school. You can then make better arguments without sounding like a donkey.

this is not something that we can be proud. this car is a Geely re badged by Proton, its not a proton so all the money goes back to China. wrong mind set

Money goes back to China but we receive high tech, superbly safe and stylish cars to travel with. What do we get when Perodua sends back all money to Japan? NOTHING! We get crap quality and outdated tech, worst their cars are totally unsafe, their 7 seater Alza without VSC is a death trap. Why must we be proud to pay more and get something less?

Bro, since when Chinese cars are so good? this car cant even be sold to western or American countries. now even in many other places so whats special? everything in Geely is either stolen tech or licensed by a another company which is common practice. All these so called good cars will wear off in less than a year and become pile of junk. you mark my word.

Ironic you should point that out. Ironic coz in Western or American countries I’d never seen any of those Fortuners, or Harriers, or Avanzas or Rushs that Toyota sold here. Your words are worthless when you can’t put up a factual argument.

          • What most of the people do not know is the fact that the technological advancement of engine technology owned by Volvo was originally acquired the patent from Mitsubishi Gdi engine technology during early year 2000’s.

According to Volvo official statement, even engine currently used by Geely was developed by them but shamelessly claimed by Geely as a co-developed with Volvo.

Yes, Volvo is owned by Geely but Volvo has an autonomy and their research facilities still located in Sweeden in which they has full control over it. Geely only manage the operation and provide the capital as per required.

Do you realise the reason why they have that autonomy & freedom and now coming out with such innovations due to Geely intentionally allowed them that leeway? See what happened when Volvo Cars was under Ford. They had no freedom & no autonomy and no money which stifled their innovation and creativity. Those periods were the worst in Volvo Cars history, now look at the difference when Geely took over. Should Geely take the credits for such innovations now? Yes why not, their off hand approach helped Volvo Cars to succeed.

Its a massive disappointment to see someone trying to argue about something without doing a proper research first. There’s an article in Forbes site about Geely dated around 2017. Search for “are Geely cars good?” in Google and you should find the article on top results titled “If Any Chinese Car Company Will Take On The World, It’s This One”. Read carefully and you will find somewhere in the article saying that Geely doesn’t focus on selling their own brand model in the west because they can do that with other brands they acquired, Volvo to mention one.

Ah, I see you’re a man of culture as well.

We are the enlightened people, we are truly blessed with the gift on knowledge.

It’s pitiful to see that person spew ignorance and insults on Geely. An enemy of Geely, just pathetic to see what a sore loser he is.

We shall march on, glory awaits us, it is our destiny. To be the leading car company, we have much work to do. There is nothing to fear, our faith will guide us to our destiny.

            ALL HAIL GEELY EMPIRE!

Of course the success of proton is because of geely. But so what? Why are some people hung up on this fact like they have a grudge on proton? The way i see it, its a win for the customer. We get more value for our hard earned buck. Proton keep your momentum!

Proton needs to produce fuel efficient car going forward. Fuel prices yo yo over period of time. Don’t depend on fuel subsidy.
