Alongside the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT500, Toyota has also pulled the wraps off the most highly-awaited Super GT racer of all, the GR Supra GT500. Set to make its racing debut in the 2020 season, the new car marks the return of the Supra nameplate to the top-flight category of the series after a 14-year absence.

Replacing the Lexus LC, the Supra GT500 is essentially the finalised version of the Super GT Concept shown earlier this year. The road car’s curvaceous body has been slammed to the ground and given massive wheel arch extensions to house the fat slick tyres, along with a plethora of race-spec aerodynamic addenda.

These include a whole manner of splitters, flics and scoops, along with a side-exit exhaust and the obligatory ginormous swan-neck rear wing. One change from the show car is a prominent U-shaped inlet now found under the Toyota badge. There are also centre-lock versions of Rays’ iconic Volk Racing TE37 wheels.

Of course, the Class One regulations that the GT500 class has adopted since 2014 means that this silhouette race car shares absolutely nothing with its roadgoing namesake. It will continue to run a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that has now also been adopted by the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) as part of the unification of the two rulebooks.

Now, while this display unit is finished in bare carbon, the actual race cars will of course feature the liveries of the respective teams. A return of the classic Castrol livery, perhaps?

  • I hope our brother does not come here and say Proton X50 is better than Toyota GR Supra GT500 and Mazda RX-8. This is trully a game over statement as X50 is a B-Segment SUV and Supra & RX-8 are sports car.
