Malaysia’s first EV set to debut in Q1 2021, says MIER

While we wait for further news about the new national car that is being developed by DreamEdge, fresh developments have surfaced on the electric vehicle front. As The Malaysian Reserve reports, Malaysia’s first EV is expected to roll out in the first quarter of 2021, with a targeted production of 50,000 units for the domestic and global markets.

According to Malaysia Institute of Economic Research (MIER) chairman Tan Sri Kamal Salih, the project developer has completed the business plan and is currently identifying the land that will site the manufacturing plant. He added that the EV will be based on Japanese technologies, but did not furnish additional details.

The EV project – which has apparently been approved by the prime minister’s office – is expected to be launched in mid-October, he said. “The target is to launch it on October 15, but it might be delayed as we have two other big projects to reveal; a national data centre and waste-to-energy project. The project developer will reveal two prototypes of EV at the groundbreaking,” he said.

Back in July, it was reported that a company called Elenvi Otomotif was planning to build EVs in Malaysia, and the project had accumulated RM5 billion in private funding. This will be used to build an EV manufacturing plant on a 161.87 ha site at Enstek Industrial Park in Negeri Sembilan, jointly developed by Elenvi and an unnamed local investor.

The earlier news report had also revealed a similar launch timeline as that mentioned in the TMR report – back then, Kamal said that the first showcase of the EV would be in October.

It is not the only project aiming to come up with locally-built EVs – it was also reported in July that Alam Perkasa Consortium (APC) had plans to set up a new carmaker called the Malaysian International Motor Company (Mimco), also with RM5 billion in private funding. The company said it aims to debut its first car, the Alif electric SUV, at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show before launching it in 2022, with global sales targeted at 60,000 units a year.

  • Malaysia for now only can build cast iron engine block. Aluminium engine block which have been around for ages, today Malaysia also still cannot make. And want to venture into EV. Please perodua or proton, learn to make an aluminium block first can or not?

But hor, Poodua lagi paria, a bloody temperature gauge also cannot make, also, their auto shitbox ‘koyak’ so easily, fuel pump rosak not even few month, and many more MAJOR problems (not minor problems) in a fairly new Poodua, yet they charge so much for their tiny junk car.

I think it is mostly about government approval pertaining EV in Malaysia. Unless it is imported such as Tesla or Prius C that generate revenue for the country via taxes. Unless certain regulations were made and to ensure that government benefitted from EV, the progress on EV will be very slow. Just my opinion.

Good. This is the way forward and what the third national car should have been. The sooner we lessen our reliance on fossil fuels, the sooner our environment can recover. Hopefully EVs can become affordable enough in time.

Design is nice but the Name is such a turn off. Not suitable for a car. Please come up with something better. Mimco? Alif? You can do better.

How about Geely Binyue? So much glamour eh? Truth about brand, it can only glow on time. Take Apple for instance, wth is Apple in electronic, electrical & software environment doing? If the product is good, eventually it becomes household name. Same with Samsung, Myvi, Perodua, Huawei, Honda, Nikon… The list goes on.

  • I think can add solar panel on top of car. So, no charge station also can recharge battery. There are pletty of assemble plant in Malaysia, why need to build new assemble plant? Even mecerdes also asked Hicom to assemble.

Do you know why drawings look nice but the actual car look nothing like in the drawing? Just look at the wheels! Relatively to the door panels, it looks like a 24in or bigger wheels. One look & you will know the designer is dreaming & have no engineering background to visualise an actual car. I’ve yet to see a local designer come up with an actual visual that engineering can follow & manufacture to exact look. Its a waste of time to draw something that visually looks stunning & produce something totally different that looks deformed. Good example – the current Proton Persona with disproportionate wheels to the body. But before that, visual drawings were of a different car. When the engineers start to mould the body based on the wheel base dimensions of the iriz, with the CAD/CAM, they could not achieve anything near the earlier visual drawings. What local designers need is a lesson in CAD/CAM & basic engine, passenger & booth compartment dimensions, wheel base length, wheel & arch dimensions, suspension travel knowledge before the person can draw something which can be produced.

Its a rendering, it can be unpractical because its an idea and it has to look nice to pass evaluation in house and only when its passed will then its up to the engineers and the designers to come up with an actual working car. A sketch render is important because you can come up with many different concepts in minutes. Even the concept car produced are totally different from the actual production car.
