Bike-hailing project in M’sia to begin January – Loke

Bike-hailing companies such as Gojek and local start-up Dego Ride will be allowed to start operations under a pilot project in January, said transport minister Anthony Loke. Companies which plan to do so will be allowed to offer rides under a six-month Proof of Concept (PoC) project in order to assess the system, while the passage of laws regulating bike-hailing operations is in the works, The Star reported.

“Among the conditions of the PoC is that it will be confined to the Klang Valley. Other conditions are that the riders must be not less than 18 years old, and they can only ferry one passenger at a time, who are not less than 18 years old,” Loke said in response to a question raised during the minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat.

Riders and their motorcycles must be clearly identifiable during the proof of concept period, while the motorcycles used for bike-hailing must be no more that five years old with riders and passengers insured.

“The PoC will also allow the government and companies involved to gather data, assess the availability and demand levels and other services related to bike-hailing,” said Loke, adding that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and police will be involved in enforcing laws based on the Road Transport Act.

The government decided to implement the pilot project as it would take time for the laws relevant to bike-hailing to be drafted, tabled and passed by Parliament, the transport minister said. In August, Gojek received the Cabinet’s agreement in principle for its implementation in the country, with the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Transport Ministry asked by Cabinet to work together in order to implement the service in the country.

This marks a development from the transport ministry’s previous stance on bike-hailing or ‘motorcycle taxi’ services, which it previously declared illegal in January 2017 as no licences were issued for this specific purpose.

Expect the accident and death rates to shoot up even higher. Our minister Loke never learnt anything from living in Malaysia I guess. He must have a very well sheltered life.

Fully agree… Its safer to provide our youths with free smartphone and monthly elaun 5k, grow them as youtuber or Mobile game developer. those with lower skill, can start as budding cyber security expert/warrior…

      Safer road, less accident.

  • BN minister wanted to bar motorcylist entering KL while PH wanted more (gojet) motorcyclist on the road. Our neighbour down south must be smiling. Congestion not solved.

Wow, looks like accident and death rates will go higher and higher, faster than inflation. Educate the motorcyclists on the roads to ride safely, not like their father’s road. Drive opposite direction, tak ikut lampu merah, park at car park lot, drive between cars when it is already so tight. Nak mati cepat? LOL!

Thats epic failure when we are pampered for 60years… Petronas was generous. Opportunities to free education, housing and jobs… social handouts, you just name it..

We dignifieds given the opportunity to learn fishing. but history proved, we want to be fed fishes… makan tinggal tulang. Besok mintak lagi… easy way lettew, buat ape susah2 kan.
But i agreed this the only way we can survived.

interesting to read the comments. other cities have done this quite successfully (NYC,LON,Jakarta). this services is on ‘a last mile connection’ and not for MotoGP service. Hence there should be enough procedures and enforcements to ensure its success. POC is one way to evaluate both the implementation and enforcement success.

  • For those who ‘Predict” more motorcycle accidents …… Hope yu GUYS have Actually use Gojek in IIndonesia or Thailand local (Last Mile connectiion) motorcycles. Having use BOTH … In genaral it allows convenience for many people who DON’T drive into city at a reasonable price and time. PLUS as a Motorcyclist( > 40yrs) …. We are also AFRAID to be injurt or involved iin accidents. In Indonesia , after speaking to riders there, they can be ROBBED or treaten too. Nothing is PERFECT(( when HUMANS are involved ))
