Vauxhall has added a front-wheel-drive variant to its Grandland X Hybrid range, joining the Grandland X Hybrid4 and Corsa-e models which are already on sale.
Here, the move to front-wheel-drive means the omission of the rear motor, and the FWD Grandland X Hybrid produces 225 hp and 360 Nm of torque in total system output; this is comprised of a 180 hp 1.6 litre turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder petrol engine and a 110 hp electric motor. These are channeled to the front driven wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Electric drive in the front-wheel-drive Grandland X is fed by a 13.2 kWh lithium-ion battery, and offers a fully-electric range of 54 km on the WLTP cycle while rated CO2 emissions is 35 g/km on the NEDC cycle; slightly improved figures compared to the Hybrid4 variant. This powertrain configuration propels the Grandland X from 0-96 km/h in 8.6 seconds, and its top speed is rated at 224 km/h.
The front-wheel-drive Grandland X can be recharged via its on-board 3.7 kW charger as standard, or via an optional 7.4 kW charger. Via a Mode 3 charging cable with the 7.4 kW charger, the hybrid battery in the FWD Grandland X can be fully recharged in less than two hours, says Vauxhall.
As with its Hybrid4 AWD twin, the FWD Grandland X is based on the PSA Group’s EMP2 platform and is therefore closely related to the second-generation Peugeot 3008, an exercise in platform-sharing that spawned from PSA’s purchase of Opel and Vauxhall in 2017.
The FWD Vauxhall Grandland X is priced from £32,390 (RM179,756) in the United Kingdom, and is slated to arrive in showrooms in April 2020. The brand continues to further the electrification of its model line with its first electric light commercial vehicle, the Vivaro-e due to arrive next year, and EV versions of the Combo Life, Combo Cargo and Vivaro Life will follow in 2021, joining the Corsa-e and Grandland X Hybrid4. Vauxhall plans for all models on sale to be electrified by 2024.
