Proton managed to sell a total of 5,676 cars in the month of May 2020, which represents a 23.3% market share for the month and a 46.5% drop from the 10,611 units delivered in same month last year.
Based on data from the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), the latest result represents a massive improvement from April, where Proton delivered just 22 vehicles. However, given the limitations due to the movement control order (MCO), this isn’t a big surprise, as many brands experienced similar if not less than encouraging results.
According to Proton, the 5,676 units delivered is a 73.2% improvement compared to the 3,277 cars delivered in March. From a year-to-date (YTD) perspective, the national carmaker’s volume dipped by 23.3% for the first five months of 2020, while total industry volume (TIV) is estimated to have reduced by 48.7%.
Despite this, Proton’s YTD market share of 21.1% keeps it in second place, which is in line with the company’s targets set for the year, and the company expects this positive momentum to continue as the Malaysian automotive industry starts its recovery.
Looking at individual models, the X70 managed to retain its position as the country’s best-selling C-segment SUV, while the Persona and Exora led in their respective segments. The Saga also performed well, as it became the best-selling car in Malaysia for the month of May.
“The MCO and CMCO were an unprecedented event in Malaysia’s history and affected every aspect of the national economy. The automotive industry is now moving towards recovery but as expected, the first month has been a period of adjustment as we adapt to the ‘new normal’ regarding all aspects of our operations,” Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton.
“Proton is thankful our sales have not contracted as much as expected and we also need to say thank you to our vendors who worked tirelessly to ensure we could regain our footing as quickly as possible. It will take a few more months to get an accurate reading of market conditions but we are quietly confident from this point onwards, we will see steady growth for the rest of the year,” he added.

Ok, I clicked the red thingy of your comment.
Cukur even in bad economy, rambutan still sells more than Musang King.
in bad times many downgred from conti cars.
Hahaha….70 units katak missing.
Now no longer 2x more than. Habislah Perodua.
I expect proton to sell more. So many stocks.
Maybe the social distancing practice causes lower productivity..
Proton every month production 10k units car, March sold 3300 units & May sold 5700 units.
Feb production 10k units, March 5k units = 15k units
15k units – 9k units sold in March & May = 6k units left can clear stock in next month.
Perodua every month production 20k units car, March sold 8600 units & May sold 7900 units.
Feb production 20k units, March 10k units = 30k units
30k units – 16.5k units sold in March & May = 13.5k units left need 2 mths to clear stock.
To the basher: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
Now P1 sales is only 30% less than P2 plus the margins are higher for P1…. soon, veli soon within next 1 year P1 sales will match or overtake P2 sales with upcoming X50 yet to unleash.
Tahniah P1. P1, Geely, Mesidis, Volvo, Lotus, LnC, Polestar > all
Syabas Saga! Rm33k kereta keluarga paling berbaloi. Goodspeed proton ahead… since MCO and CMCO, many lost job and no income, no food.. syukur for unemployed, youths and fresh grads got kerja kosong kat Pasar borong kL, rezeki halal dan kerja berfaedah. body pon sado…
Habislah Beza! Once again Saga sales beat the crap out, I recalled someone was so boastful that his Beza sales will gameover Saga.
Now reality is Saga will gameover Beza even after facelifted. Habislah Beza! Habislah Perodua!
The gist of, “the national carmaker’s volume dipped by 23.3% for the first five months of 2020, while total industry volume (TIV) is estimated to have reduced by 48.7%.”
Basically, while market depressed by 48% Proton only reduced by 21% leading to a near-doubling in marketshare by Proton. Well done Proton, well done.
So what happens to Geely’s ambitious target for Proton in Asean? Anything achieved yet? 2% of total market share?? No??
That is still ongoing. Why concern urself on a long term 10-20 year plan today?
I’d like to see that materialize as well.
On another note, I think Proton made a huge mistake by letting go the Philippine market to Geely. Malaysia and the rest of Asean market are now left with aged Geely rebadged Proton while the Filipinos enjoy the latest
Pinoy is left hand drive, Geely doesn’t need to do any conversion engineering like Proton would for their cars, so how is this detrimental to Proton?
Someone thought the whole ASEAN is right hand drive market. Clear general knowledge fail!
Enjoy the latest – China and Philippine both are Similar Lefthand Drive Countries. already Mfgr as in LHD from Geely so skips the Righthand Drive Conversion Engineering Process.
Why Philipine – too small Total Industry Volume compared to the mammoth of those 2 – Indonesia + Thailand > Million TIV annually.
Not really though. Geely Binyue (X50) is not an outdated platform. The reason why we are still not seeing X50 is because of the conversion from LHD to RHD. The conversion is not as easy as it sounds. New tool, new testing requirement and reliability testing need to be redone as well as some tuning up for better market adaptation and regulation. Geely Haoyue is just recently launched in China, and rumors by Paultan, it could be the next proton model. So, not really dated.
The Philipines market size does not justify the cost of conversion to LHD and yes, Geely is just across the South China Sea. The idea was always for PROTON to concentrate on RHD countries. Let’s also not forget that outside of China, the rest of the world has very little experience of owning and living with Geely products. Sure, they read the stories, they know about Li Shufu and they’re aware of Volvo, Lotus, London Taxi, Terrafugia and now Smart belonging to the group but actual experience of buying, owning and living with a Geely car is scarce on the ground. If the future group structure is to be PROTON at the entry-level, Geely slightly above, Lynk & Co above that and then Volvo, Polestar and Lotus right at the top then the Geely automobile needs to be experienced by more consumers outside of the home country.
Awaiting debuts of Vietnam national cars, VIN EV. Need consider because fuel price will be higher after CMO
How I wish Proton could have an additional safety option package for the Saga. I’d gladly pay a couple of thousand more for a 6 airbag version. Everything else is perfect for my college going kids since the Premium version already has VSC.
Exactly bro. Still cheaper than Bezza or Myvi but will have full safety.
Saya pun sokong cadangan tu.
That would be the best but at that price range highly unlikely as the cost of full suite airbags would bring the car price too close to full spec Persona. You’re better off getting Persona if that is the case. Either way, you still get a safer car compared to other alternatives. Remember Safety First!
Thanks Safety First. Point taken. After checking, only the Persona Premium has 6 airbags and is priced at RM 55k. Big difference compared to Saga. That’s why I’m hoping for a safety option package. Will pay 2 to 3 k more for additional 4 airbags.
It’s truly heartening to note that both our national cars (Perodua & Proton) combined has commanded about 62% of the total local market share. This inevitably help to boost our local economy with the ‘buy M’sian first’ principle in place!
You’re wrong bro. Perodua isn’t a real national car maker as their cars are just rebadged old Daihatsu models, so all profits made by Perodua is siphoned off back to Japan as part of royalty fees. Buying Perodua cars doesn’t support our local economy at all but it only helps to send money out of Malaysia. To truly boost our local economy, buy Proton cars instead. This is the real deal national car maker.
That’s a bit harsh bro. Perodua will be the regional R&D hub for Daihatsu and they are already heavily involved in the cars they make for Malaysia. It may look like copy paste but some of their work is adopted by Daihatsu too. Furthermore, Perodua, it’s vendors, dealers and staff are an important part of Malaysia’s automotive ecosystem. Without their volume all local assemblers would have local parts pricing issues and let’s not forget the local tax element provided by a huge company that directly and indirectly employs so many Malaysians.
So, ultimately, do not belittle the local brands. There is enough space for both Perodua and PROTON and if each pushes the other to succeed with the support of their foreign partners, then the winner will be Malaysia and all of us as consumers.
With a market of 600,000? Nuh uh no way we can sustain having 2 national car makes without both suffering. Take a look at Korea whom have a market size far larger than Malaysia and still their 2 biggest car maker (Hyundai & KIA) couldn’t survive without merging. Right now, proton is holding the edge in IP creation with their own cars and with Geely backing, their future is much brighter so let’s move forward with just proton and close down perodua. Until today, perodua has not proven their engineering capabilities other than reskinning Daihatsus & Toyotas.
Saga best selling car … is this an omen to our economy?
Axia/Viva have been bestseller for a decade. Was that an omen?
Where are the high-range Proton cars like Proton Perdana and Proton Inspira?
Not interested in Proton 1.6 and below
Proton needs to build their reserves by selling lower segments of cars before developing new models for higher segments.
