2020 Nissan Almera Turbo – Malaysian model has the highest specification levels in ASEAN, says ETCM

2020 Nissan Almera Turbo – Malaysian model has the highest specification levels in ASEAN, says ETCM

During the product presentation at the 2020 Nissan Almera Turbo preview earlier today, Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) took the opportunity to highlight the high level of equipment and features on the model from the get-go. In what is a rarity but hopefully will become the norm, the company said that the Almera sold here has the highest specifications levels in the ASEAN market.

It compared its top-of-the-line VLT variant with the range-leading VL sold in Thailand, the market that debuted the second-gen N18 in the region. By and large, the two versions are identical in terms of equipment levels, with items such as a semi-digital instrument display with a seven-inch colour screen and a Nissan Connect infotaiment system with eight-inch touchscreen display found on both cars.

Likewise, the presence of Nissan Safety Shield 360 on both range-topping Malaysian and Thai models. The package features a raft of driver assistance components such as Intelligent Forward Collision Warning and Intelligent Forward Emergency Braking, which is also known as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert and an Intelligent Around View Monitor (360-degree bird’s eye view) with moving object detection.

However, the Malaysian VLT has a couple of features not found on the Thai-market VL, namely a cruise control system and 60:40 split foldable rear seats. The local car also has a higher level of equipment in a few areas, specifically in the form of its leather upholstery (fabric in Thailand), LED daytime running lights (halogens in Thailand) and its machined two-tone 16-inch alloy wheels (a size up from the 15-incher equipping the Thai VL model).

As it is in Thailand, only a single engine option is available for the Almera, and that’s a HR10DET (designated the HRA0 in Thailand) 1.0 litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine offering 100 PS at 5,000 rpm and 152 Nm of torque from 2,400 to 4,000 rpm. The mill is paired with an Xtronic CVT with D-Step Logic and Sport mode.

Malaysia will have three variants of the Almera, a baseline VL grade, a mid-spec VLP and the aforementioned VLT. Bookings for the car open tomorrow (September 5), and estimated prices start at RM8x,xxx for the VL, RM8x,xxx for the mid-VLP model, and RM9x,xxx for the VLT. We’ve detailed all the specifications and equipment on all three Nissan Almera Turbo variants in our earlier post, which you can find here. Also, we’ve made some quick driving observations about the car, which you can view in the video below.

Everyone (Nissan, Honda) was trembling at what Proton X50 will bring onto their turf. They saw how X70 absolutely slaughtered CR-V top of the segment sales and learning from that, they are challenged to up the spec count. They could no longer live off the huuuugggeee profit margins selling kosong specs anymore. And all that from Proton-Geely nascent partnership…..

Finally ETCM has woke up and is willing to bring the full spec Almera. This is a great news. I hope ETCM can bring more Game Changers with excellent specs to replace every outdated Nissan models that are currently sold here. But if this happens, Proton will need to struggle even more to compete. Right now, the next gen Game-Changing Almera will definitely disrupt Persona sales

Expensive??? Do you know how much it sold at Thailand where there is tax free for car? The highest spec is Baht 640k (RM 84k). Even if Malaysia priced at RM 95k it is RM 11k more than Thailand. Remember Malaysia has excise duty to protect national car. This time ETC is doing a good job bring the new Almera and with appropriate price. Unless you thought it can be sold at RM 80k for highest spec which not going to happen.

If you feel overpriced stick back with national car or bicycle then.

Tan Chong really went full throttle on the Almera, and justly so ! When the old Almera launched here, it became the best-selling non-national car in 2013. But shortly after, Toyota and Honda also launched their new Vios and City, and the Almera got sidelined. Still, the old Almera had a distinct price advantage over the Vios and City. Unfortunately it felt cheaper too. This latest Almera looks and feels premium enough, and it has all the latest gadgets, but now prices are probably going to be closer to the Vios and new City.

Tan Chong is gambling that the Almera will hold its own come 2021. Hopefully the gamble pays off for them, because Nissan’s local market share is at an all-time low. But whatever happens, just remember that Tan Chong is as old as Malaysia itself. You can bet they have a Plan B, C, D, all the way to Z.

VW golf gti, tsi and R using similar designs.

The reason…by putting exhaust manifold at the back, it shortens the exhaust pipe and making it lighter. The catalytic converter also heats up to working temp faster.

Putting intake manifold at front of the engine is very logical so it won’t get heated up the rear of engine bay. And it’s not new, even the vios NCP42 (marketed by Britney Spears in the brochures) was using this right down to the dugong (NCP93)

Only one USB port for rear passengers? Not a deal breaker but it looks so odd. Two would have been better but some segments dont even bother to put any. Design wise Almera has matured to be a handsome looking car making Ah Beng salivate to slap some after market body kit and fit it obnoxious exhaust. If only the price range is between RM7xK to RM8xK to entice people as the brand name has not garner much interest unless you are talking about the GTRs.

Turbo is mean of fuel saving while retain relatively good power. As long as keeping the rpm low the fuel consumption will be lower. No matter how it is guarantee X70 consume more with higher displacement and more weight. Of course X70 is way powerful than Almera.

Great that ETCM brings in a fresh approach.

IMO Malaysia consumers need to be reminded again HIGH SPECS does not always meant HIGH QUALITY.

Nissan owners will be very familiar with ETSM product quality.
