VIDEO: Geely Haoyue/Okavango gets official “review”

Geely’s latest SUV, the Haoyue (or the Okavango as it’s called in the Philippines), is a curious vehicle – a seven-seater crossover that is skewed more towards Southeast Asian tastes than China’s. Even more curious is this video that the company has put out, which is being touted as an official “review” of sorts.

This SUV-loving American host (his words, not ours) has taken the Haoyue for a spin, highlighting certain elements like the design, boot space, optional inflatable mattress (yes, really), 360-degree camera system and large panoramic sliding sunroof. He also gives some opinions about the way it drives, saying that the car provides ample power and a comfortable and easygoing driving experience.

As this is a video produced by Geely itself, don’t expect much in the way of criticism, though the host does make some mild nitpicking of the smallish 18-inch wheels, some cheap-feeling interior trim and the use of a torsion beam instead of an independent rear suspension setup.

The Haoyue is the largest SUV in Geely’s lineup and is available in five- and seven-seat variants – the latter is even offered with seven individually-adjustable seats. Power comes from the same 1.8 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine you’ll find in the Proton X70, here making 181 PS and 300 Nm of torque. It’s all sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

As for the Philippines, the Okavango was launched there last month with the same 1.5 litre turbo three-cylinder and 48-volt mild hybrid setup as the Azkarra (Boyue Pro), churning out 190 PS. Prices range from 1,208,000 pesos (RM102,000) to 1,328,000 pesos (RM112,100). Will the Haoyue make it here as a Proton, possibly badged as the X90? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Pls bring this in as opposed to the Geely MPV. This has better bootspace.

  • That’s the difference between a country with no national cars and one with two national cars. They get to buy the latest model and their cars are cheaper than our national cars.

But their non-national cars are more expensive than equivalents here. I wonder why since they shouldn’t have any reason to be higher than our prices.

If you are referring to the Philippines, it depends on the model, as well as how taxes are structured – trade agreements, etc. Also, direct import from China is possible because of left hand drive. Hard to compare pricing as well because here there’s the concept of national cars, and as commented earlier, the PH market has nothing like that. Civic TC-P CKD here is RM139k, there the top-spec Civic CBU is RM136k – pretty close, but top-spec Toyota Wigo (Axia) in PH tops out at RM59k (!!!!!). Not exactly same specs, but Geely Boyue there starts at RM121k, here the X70 premium X is only 122k. Even the CX-5 there is built in Malaysia, so the same car CKD there is CBU here.
The real killer in PH is the high interest for monthly repayments (5 years max compared to 9 years here), bad road quality (KL feels like 1st world compared to there) as well as the petrol prices which are 2x those in Malaysia.

Not just Pinoy but also Thai & Indon. Same phenomena Japanese cars are pricier in these countries than in Malaysia. Shocking really as many here subscribe to the mantra that national car has jacked up car prices but in truth other countries the prices are even higher.

  • If this is the 3rd model from geely to be Proton as confirmed by the RHB investment, better P1 team to replace the rim design with the one in Icon or Boyue pro. 17′ or 18′ kinda too small for this Grandy! stick only with 20′ rim for all variants

What P1 needs is a 1.5 litre and 2.0 litre sedan, plus a decent MPV from Geely.Together with X 50 and X70,P1 can start the rebuilding process.
The current range of Saga, pesona and Exora is outdated with the Campro engine. The coming facelifts just buy some time.
Of course,we must not forget DRB have to fork out hundreds of millions of RM when they make right hand versions of existing Geely models, since they ” tumpang”,without spending billions on R and D.
But time is running out.Peugeot and soon KIA brands will be revamped by Bermaz and at full throttle very soon. The sooner P1 acts, the more they can recoup from the accumulated losses.

This foray is a market test. If successful, bigger engines with more than 350hp will make its way to USA.

“though the host does make some mild nitpicking of the smallish 18-inch wheels”

This is what Proton has been doing with all their models…as like the car is perfect except some tiny issues while never address the elephant in the room.

When car is so good, people can only nitpick at things. Same thing with Proton.

Proton have 2 SUVs already, consider giving it a break.. Bring this in 2022 if have to. The 3rd model adapted from Geely should be as originally planned i.e. a MPV. Then moved on to replace the rest of the PIES line up.
