Hydrogen economy and technology action plan being formulated for Malaysia, according to Dr Adham Baba

In an effort to make Malaysia one of the leading players in the hydrogen industry in Southeast Asia as well as the world, the government has said a hydrogen economy and technology action plan will be formulated, according to a report by Bernama.

According to science, technology and innovation minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba, his ministry, through the National Nanotechnology Centre (NNC), had appointed NanoMalaysia as a strategic partner to prepare the plan.

“Preparations are being carried out in collaboration with the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, NanoVerify (a subsidiary of NanoMalaysia) and Malaysian Green Technology Corporation. The plan will be a guide to develop the hydrogen economy and technology up to 2050,” Adham said during a Dewan Rakyat meeting yesterday.

He was replying to a question by Datuk Seri Hasan Arifin who wanted to know total hydrogen energy exports from 2020 until June 2021 as well as the measures taken by the government to enhance and commercialise the industry in the country.

Adham added that the hydrogen economy is an alternative energy sector that would be focused upon in the government’s commitment to make Malaysia a carbon-neutral nation by as early as 2050.

Currently, the value of renewable energy exports is still small, but Adham says there is potential in terms of economic growth if the green initiative is expanded quickly. “Based on Department of Statistics Malaysia [data], exports of hydrogen contribute 1.5% as compared to other gas exports at about RM1.2 billion. In Malaysia, Petronas and Sarawak Energy are leading in exports of the resource,” he said.

Sarawak state government is already planning for CKD FCEVs with H2X Global from Australia. FCEV buses have been running about Kuching since last year & the Sarawak CM is using a Hyundai Nexo as an official car, which is 1 of 2 that are undergoing road trials since 2 years ago.

Meanwhile federal ministers using Vellfires as official cars despite their call to go green by using public transport.

      Walk the talk, please.

According to the Sarawak state government, the plan is to channel the excess power from the Bakun hydroelectric dam into producing hydrogen gas via electrolysis.

This is a good alternative future. Speedy refuel yet zero carbon emissions.
For passenger vehicles to commercial vehicles.

    • U sure are not aware that the hydrogen is obtained from natural gas. So u are shifting the pollutant around, not actually obtaining hydrogen thru renewable energy

  • Do not fall for the Hydrogen hype and ‘renewable hydrogen’, ‘low carbon’, ‘clean’, and ‘decarbonised’ hydrogen. Don’t believe the hype.

Please compare the Efficiency rates of Hydrogen and Electric drives. The overall efficiency rate for electric battery to drive is approximately 76% while by using fuel-cell to electric battery to drive is 30%.

The Hydrogen hype has been created by the Big Oil companies as a distraction and to keep us dependant on fossil gas for years to come.

    This is the way.

Not EV with their slow charging time. Batteries are also made of hazardous materials and the electric power needed are still being generated by coal power plants in certain parts of the world, defeating the purpose of going green with EVs.

Then there’s the over capacity of power grids in countries like Korea and Japan where they are reaching max capacity during summer time resulting in blackouts.

Furthermore how are the poorer people and their JMBs who live in old flats and apartments going to afford to upgrade?
