2022 Mk8 Volkswagen Golf R-Line Malaysian pricing revealed – RM170,560; CKD; 1.4L TSI with 150 PS, 8AT

At long last, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has finally revealed official pricing for the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R-Line. First announced for our market back in October 2021, the most affordable variant of the Mk8 Golf range has appeared at quite a few events previously, including a media preview in Sekinchan last November as well as at the Sepang International Circuit (the GTI and R were also launched there) and Premium Auto Car Expo (PACE) this year.

The asking price is RM170,560 on-the-road without insurance, which is more than the estimated pricing revealed to us in February. Unlike its predecessor, the new R-Line, like the latest GTI, is locally assembled (CKD) in Pekan, Pahang – a first for the Golf here.

Under the bonnet, the Golf R-Line gets the familiar 1.4 litre TSI engine with 150 PS and 250 Nm from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm, with the drive being sent to the front wheels not through a DSG dual-clutch gearbox, but an Aisin-sourced eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission – this setup is also what Australia gets.

The standard R-Line package means a sporty exterior with gloss black accents, with variant-specific exhaust finishers and grille inserts to set it apart from the GTI. The wheels are 17-inch Valencia alloys (with 225/45 profile tyres), while the rest of the exterior features automatic LED Plus headlamps with LED light bars that meet at the VW logo (not DRLs), accompanied by LED taillights with dynamic turn signals and automatic wipers.

Moving inside, the Mk8’s minimalist cabin features manual Sardegna fabric seats with suede-like Art Velours sections and an embossed R logo. You also get a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel that is positioned beside a 10-inch Discover Media infotainment touchscreen with navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and seven speakers.

Elsewhere, touch-sensitive panels are used to control the car’s lighting and triple-zone climate control (with rear vents), adjust the infotainment volume, and for quick access to various vehicle functions by way of a panel between the central air vents. The buttons on the steering wheel are also capacitive.

Other items on the kit list include keyless entry and engine start, an electronic parking brake (but without auto hold), an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated wing mirrors, an ambient lighting system with five presets, four USB-C ports (two front, two rear), and black headliner and interior trim.

In the safety department, R-Line gets the usual six airbags, ABS and ESP. However, there’s no driver assistance systems like autonomous emergency braking (AEB) or adaptive cruise control. ISOFIX child seat anchors are available for the corner rear seats as well as the front passenger seat.

The Golf R-Line is offered in five colours, including Moonstone Grey (solid), Kings Red and Atlantic Blue (metallic) and Deep Black and Oryx White (pearl). Each purchase comes with a five-year/unlimited-mileage warranty, three years free maintenance and five years of roadside assistance.

Should have standardized this engine-gearbox combo between the Golf and the Tiguan. A torque converter auto box on an SUV is always welcome.

Volkswagen is not premium car in Germany, only in Malaysia, in fact it means people’s car. Btw the price tag of rm170k for 1.4 turbo meaning they have signed death certificate for this car. Too damn expensive, plus questionable reliability.

They’re practically aiming for the same market, why shouldn’t Civic and Golf be compared?

Plus VW periodic maintenance is expensive compared to Civic. Even VW Polo/Vento half yearly service is about 600+ which is expensive as compared to City etc.

A VW only needs servicing once a year or 15,000km, whichever comes first. Where on earth your ‘half-yearly’ claim comes from?

I know cause I drive a Polo Sedan(Vento) for 7 years and go to official SC.

The Golf MK8 Greyish cushion and interior is quite a turnoff too. X50 a better bargain, both also not performance car, compact.

    • alza also from high spec rm60k inreased to rm75k. Alza offers you more so called advanced technology where majority consumers do not need it. Golf mk8 improve its handing which is the base of manufacturing a car, where every driver can enjoy daily. Even though the price is a bit high but look at all car models also come with higher price now.

      • Helloo.. i think you are the only person who do not need the latest & advance technology. Majority of the people would appreciate the latest technology.

Only minority of the people would actually appreciate the so called good handling that you mentioned. Majority of the people couldnt care less. modern cars nowadays already handle quite good for a daily drive.

Good looks + advance safety systems + Good maintenance always tick the boxes. AEB for example is a life saving techs why wouldnt you need it?

Because of people like you vw didnt bring the features to MY where it is available to all other countries. Shame on you!

        E.g
        1. Bad potholes comfort
        2. Bad turning radius despite short length car.
        3. Digital affointment not very intuitive.
No volume button control, not at the screen, not even at the steering – capacitive but not always reactive touch.
        4. Basic Sofa, no digital control.

    • No. If a person buy a 2 million supercar, there is not much difference to top up another rm200k. But if a person already stretch himself to buy rm170k car, it is not easy to fork out another rm50k to upgrade for the gti. Something like myvi owner rm60k unable upgrade to city hatchback rm85k. It is not they do not want to but not afford.

  • Pricing wise really “neither here nor there”..
Biggest rival in this segment at this price is the Mazda3 2L highplus. But the Mazda has the looks and interior plushness that people are willing to pay for (not to mention the safety features).. the Golf 1.4 is pretty barebone. Anyway both are left field choices.

It is just a few more steps away from the 218i GC in terms of pricing. Although the beemer is 10hp down on power, but the BMW emblem is what ppl willing to pay for ..

Foresee Golf TSI and Passat will slowly exiting the Msia market and continue with Tiguan, might bring in a another B-seg SUV maybe. That is what Peugeot Msia is doing right now. Ford drop all it’s line up and only selling pick-up. Renault only selling it’s SUVs and Megane RS (which will be discontinued globally)
